It’s been the “talk of the town” since Ravindra Jadeja was not selected for the ODI series against Sri Lanka and Yuzvendra Chahal’s absence from both white-ball squads.
Ravindra Jadeja’s absence saga
Shortly after India won the T20 World Cup in June, players Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, and Virat Kohli declared their retirement from cricket’s shortest format. Three weeks later, Jadeja was left off the squad for the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, which is scheduled to take place in Colombo from August 3–7. Kohli and Rohit were asked to end their vacation early. Does that mean the all-rounder’s white-ball career is over? Is Jadeja only a cricketer for the Tests now?
Now we have the answer to this question. According to some reports, the chief of BCCI’s selection committee, Ajit Agarkar, and Team India’s head coach, Gambhir, did not choose Jadeja for the tour of Sri Lanka for two reasons. The first one is that the board would want Axar Patel to test in the ODI format to check whether he is suitable for the format and can match his T20 performances. The second reason is that India’s think tank wants Jadeja to be as fresh as possible for all 10 Test matches India is scheduled to play between September 2023 and January 2024—five at home against Bangladesh and New Zealand and five in Australia.
Given that Jadeja was one of the few members of the World Cup 2023 squad to be cut, it was presumed that he was not included in the Champions Trophy calculations when he went AWOL (absent without leave). However, according to some reports from ESPNCricinfo, Jadeja was convinced by the selectors that he would continue to be India’s premier spin-bowling all-round player, and he has been rested rather than dropped.
What’s ahead for Yuzvendra Chahal?
Why has Chahal been the topic of discussion? This might be the first thing that can come to the mind of a cricket fan after Chahal’s discussion for selection in white-ball cricket given that he did not play in any of India’s T20 World Cup matches last month, having last participated in the competition in August 2023, and that he had not played in an ODI for more than 19 months, but the ESPNCricinfo report shares that the legspinner has been placed on hold by the selectors for the time being.
Chahal has been one of the best performers for India whenever he gets the chance. Despite his best efforts, the shifting nature of the game denies Chahal his place as a true No. 11 in a lineup across the two white-ball formats. Regardless of being a bowler of elite caliber, the selectors believe he will need to wait for his chance and seize it when it comes.
Now that the opportunity to be in India’s squad for the Sri Lanka tour has passed, Chahal’s greatest chance is to do well in the Vijay Hazare Trophy competition and make his case strong for selection in the Indian team’s upcoming series. Because the BCCI will be closely observing the List A domestic tournament to choose players for the Champions Trophy and the England home series.
