Australia has selected a 16-person squad for the upcoming T20 International series against the West Indies, which begins July 20 in Jamaica and St. Kitts. The series will see Mitchell Marsh return to captaincy duties after taking paternity leave post the IPL season with Lucknow Super Giants.
While Marsh continues to manage back issues and is unlikely to bowl in the series, his batting was explosive throughout the IPL and solidified his place at the top of the order. Australia will take on the series with a combination of seasoned players and fresh faces in its first steps towards preparing for T20 World Cup scheduled for 2026 in India and Sri Lanka.
Among the big stories is the exclusions of IPL stars Jake Fraser-McGurk, Marcus Stoinis, and Xavier Bartlett. Fraser-McGurk was once seen as a long-term replacement for David Warner, yet he has been left out after a series of low scores in international and IPL cricket. The 23-year-old registered just one score over 20 in his past eight T20I appearances and failed to deliver as a player for Delhi Capitals this IPL season, therefore, selectors have told him to play domestic cricket and look to develop his overall game.
Stoinis, who was Australia’s finisher in the 2021 T20 World Cup and played multidimensional roles in Punjab Kings‘ recent IPL exploits, has also been left out. Stoinis is available for T20Is but is not under a central contract and is committed to playing in The Hundred, which conflicts with the fixture commitment. His absence will give an opportunity for young all-rounders such as Aaron Hardie and debutant Mitchell Owen.
Owen was rewarded with a first national call-up for his domestic form, having smashed the joint-fastest century in BBL history earlier. He struggled in overseas leagues after the BBL, however, selectors have seen enough of him in his aggressive style to justify selecting him in this squad and to work on his potential as a late-order hitter.
Prior to the World Cup in the subcontinent, spin bowling is certainly becoming in the spotlight. With Ashton Agar sidelined with injury, Matthew Kunemann gets his first T20I call-up as a second specialist spinner remains behind Adam Zampa, with conventional spin further supported by Glenn Maxwell and Cooper Connolly.
This fast bowling unit will lead with Josh Hazlewood, who has been identified as the only three-format paceman who has not been rested for the series. Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Travis Head will return after the Test series in the Caribbean. In addition to Hazlewood, Nathan Ellis, Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis, and Spencer Johnson are a strong fast bowling group.
Chair of Selectors George Bailey emphasized that this series is the beginning of Australia’s World Cup preparation, with many opportunities still open for players to break into the squad through consistent performances.
