Surya Kumar Yadav Biography

Early Life and Background

Suryakumar Yadav was born on 14 September 1990 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. His family originally hails from Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. Surya grew up in Mumbai, where he attended Atomic Energy Central School and later graduated with a B.Com from Pillai College. His cricketing journey began at a young age when he started playing under the mentorship of his paternal uncle, Vinod Kumar Yadav, in Varanasi. Surya’s cricketing skills were further honed at various cricket camps, including one at the BARC colony in Mumbai, where he was coached by Ashok Kamat. SKY also trained at the Elf Vengsarkar Academy under the guidance of legendary cricketer and former Indian captain Dilip Vengsarkar before moving on to play age-group cricket for Mumbai.

Domestic Career

Surya Kumar Yadav’s domestic career took off in the early 2010s when he made his debut for Mumbai in domestic cricket. In February 2010, Surya made his List A debut for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He made his T20 debut later that year, and his first-class debut came in December 2010.

During the 2011–12 Ranji Trophy season, Surya scored 754 runs in nine matches, establishing himself as one of Mumbai’s top batsmen. His stellar performances continued in subsequent seasons, including a standout 2015–16 campaign where he scored 788 runs to help Mumbai lift the Ranji Trophy. He also captained the Mumbai team for a brief period during the 2014–15 Ranji season.

His consistency in domestic cricket, particularly in the 50-over format, saw him scoring a career-best 241 runs in the 2018-19 Vijay Hazare Trophy. Surya continued to be a regular presence in domestic tournaments and captained Mumbai during the 2019–20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Deodhar Trophy.

IPL Career

Suryakumar Yadav’s IPL career began in 2012 when he was signed by the Mumbai Indians, though he played just one match that season. In 2014, he was picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders(KKR), where he enjoyed significant success, scoring over 600 runs across four seasons and winning the 2014 IPL title.

In 2018, Yadav returned to the Mumbai Indians for a hefty price and soon became one of the team’s most reliable performers. He played a crucial role in MI’s successful campaigns in 2019 and 2020, scoring over 1400 runs across three seasons. He had his best IPL season in 2023, scoring 605 runs, including his maiden IPL century, and cementing his place as one of the premier T20 players in the world.

International Career

Suryakumar Yadav made his international debut in 2021, starting with a T20I debut against England. He quickly made a name for himself with his audacious stroke play, becoming the first Indian to hit a six off the first ball faced in a T20I match. His T20I performances earned him a call-up to the Indian ODI team later in the year.

In 2022, he exploded onto the international stage with a series of match-winning performances. He scored his first T20I century in a series against England, followed by another stellar knock in the 2022 Asia Cup. His consistency and innovative shot-making made him the integral aspect of India’s T20I setup, and by 2022, he became the number-one ranked T20I batsman in the world.

Yadav’s performances in the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, where he was the third-highest run-scorer, further solidified his status as one of the best T20 players globally. In 2023, he achieved another milestone, scoring his second T20I century against New Zealand and taking his tally of T20I centuries to four—becoming only the second player after Rohit Sharma to achieve such a feat in T20 internationals.

In 2023, Yadav made his Test debut against Australia, though he has predominantly been known for his performances in limited-overs cricket. He was named the captain of India’s T20I side in November 2023, following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from T20Is.

Playing Style

Suryakumar Yadav is known for his aggressive, fearless batting and his ability to hit all around the ground, particularly his innovative shots behind the wicket. His ability to play unconventional strokes, such as the scoop over fine leg, has earned him the nickname “Mr. 360.” He thrives in the middle order, capable of accelerating the innings from the outset and taking on the opposition’s best bowlers with ease.

His adaptability in the shortest format, combined with his flair and  innovation creativity, & agricultural shots makes him one of the most ferocious T20 batsmen in the world.

Personal Life

Ashok Kumar Yadav and Swapna Yadav are Surya Kumar Yadav’s parents. His father, Ashok Kumar Yadav, is a scientist at BARC, and Surya’s mother, Swapna Yadav, is a musical artist. Suryakumar Yadav married Devisha Shetty, a trained dancer and dance coach, on 7 July 2016. The couple met in 2010 during a college program. SKY’s personal life, particularly his support system in his wife and his parents, has often highlighted as a key factor in his success both on and off the field.
