1. South Africa vs Australia: 2006

(Target: 435, Scored: 438/9)

The record for the highest run chase in ODI Cricket history belongs to the South African cricket team. They successfully chased a target of 436 runs in Johannesburg in 2006. A knock of 164 runs by Australian captain Ricky Ponting propelled the visitors to a first-innings total of 435 runs.

A reply came in an excellent form of 175 runs from Herschelle Gibbs. The other half-centurions from the South African side were captain Graeme Smith and wicketkeeper Mark Boucher. Hosta finished the run chase of the target with just one ball over.

2. South Africa vs Australia: 2016

(Target: 372, Scored: 372/6)

The two teams feature in the list for the second consecutive time. This time around, Australia, batting first, put up a score of 371 runs. David Warner top-scored with a knock of 117 runs while skipper Steve Smith scored a century.

Meanwhile, Aaron Finch made some contribution with a half-century. In reply, the entire South African batting line-up chipped in with runs, with maximum contribution coming from David Miller (118*), Quinton de Kock (70), and Hashim Amla (45). These knocks helped the Proteas chase down the target in 49.2 overs.

3. England vs West Indies: 2019

(Target: 361, Scored: 364/4)

This was the 2019 match between England and the West Indies, played in Bridgetown. The batting first, West Indies put 360 on the board after a century from Chris Gayle and a half-century from Shai Hope.

However, England chased down the target with more than an over to spare, due to centuries by Jason Roy and Joe Root and a half-century by captain Eoin Morgan. Roy’s was special as it came at a strike rate of 144.70.

4. India vs Australia: 2013

(Target: 360, Scored: 362/1)

India secured an all-round victory over Australia in Jaipur in 2013. Australia had batted first and had scored 359 runs thanks to half-tons by Aaron Finch, Phillip Hughes, Shane Watson, Glenn Maxwell, and captain George Bailey. In the reply, India chased the same target in just 43.3 overs as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had scored century apiece. Shikhar Dhawan had scored 95 runs during the period. The match had gone to India by 9 wickets.

5. England vs Pakistan: 2019

(Target: 359, Scored: 359/4)

The visitors batted first in the 3rd ODI of Pakistan’s tour of England in 2019 and scored 358 for the loss of nine wickets. Nearly half the runs were scored by a single man, the opening batsman Imam ul Haq who ended with 151 off 131. England chased it down quite easily as they closed in little more than five overs in hand. Jonny Bairstow made a century, Jason Roy made a half-century, while Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Moeen Ali made it happen on one of the biggest successful chases ever in ODI cricket.

6. Australia vs India: 2019

(Target: 359, Scored: 359/6)

Australia were looking to get revenge against India after their recent debacle in 2013 spoken about in this article above.

The visitors chased 359 runs with more than two overs to spare in the 4th ODI of the Australian tour of India in 2019. Indian openers, Rohit Sharma, and Shikhar Dhawan added a colossal opening partnership of 193 runs to take India to a massive total. However, a match-winning knock from Peter Handscomb (117) and Ashton Turner (84) helped Australia move towards a comfortable victory.

7. India vs England: 2017

(Target: 351, Scored: 356/7)

It was a run-fest in the 1st ODI of the England tour of India in 2017. Batting first, England posted 350 runs at the loss of 7 wickets after half-centuries from Jason Roy, Joe Root and Ben Stokes. 

India chased down the target with nearly two overs to spare. The captain Virat Kohli scored 122 runs, and Kedar Jadhav followed suit with 120 runs.

8. India vs Australia: 2013

Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli batted India to a memorable run chase in the 6th ODI of Australia’s tour of India in 2013. Batting first, Australia scored 350 for the loss of six wickets. Shane Watson and skipper George Bailey aggregated half-centuries. In reply, with century contributions from Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli, the match went in favor of India with 3 balls to spare.

9. England vs New Zealand: 2015

It was an impressive win for the hosts in the 4th ODI of New Zealand’s tour of England 2015. Kiwis batted first and scored 349 runs with half-hundreds from Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson, and Grant Elliott. England chased the same target within just 44 overs. Joe Root and the captain himself Eoin Morgan, played impressive tons bringing to home the memory of winning the match.

10. New Zealand vs Australia: 2007

(Target: 347, Scored: 350/9)

An interesting match in which New Zealand chased 350 runs against Australia in 2007. It was NZ’s first-ever highest run chase in ODI format. New Zealand won this match in the last over. Brendon McCullum scored 86 runs at a crucial time and won by 1 wicket.
