KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant? The dilemma of the Sri Lanka ODI Series for Captain Rohit and Coach Gambhir

The three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka brings up the first dilemma of Gautam Gambhir’s coaching tenure as KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant have been selected in the ODI squad. Before his lethal car accident, Pant was the first-choice keeper of Team India

But after his injury, KL Rahul has filled up his place remarkably, and now both are up for selection in playing 11 of the 1st ODI against Sri Lanka. With both having a strong case to be selected in the playing 11. Now it has become a dilemma cum headache for Gautam Gambhir-led team management to select one and bench another despite both being deserving candidates.

Rahul has held the role of wicketkeeper-batter since the Asia Cup in the previous year, following Pant’s long-term injury absence. Rahul was part of the previous team coached by Rahul Dravid. Since then, Rahul has diligently performed his duties both in front of and behind the wicket.

Rahul has scored 834 runs in 21 matches since the Asia Cup last year, with an average of 69.50 and two centuries. Rahul also skippered India against South Africa in the ODI series earlier this year. The 32-year-old has also shown to be an effective stumper.

But now that Pant is back in the mix, would Gambhir choose Pant over Rahul as the first-choice keeper or reward Rahul for the work he has done in the absence of Pant? Although it has been good to see Pant return to the Indian team for a string of T20Is following that terrible accident in 2022, his performances have not ignited the field.

There have been some optimistic sparks during the last month or two. But is that enough to persuade the decision-makers to choose him over Rahul?

The pair will be eager to commemorate the return of the 50-over format with a memorable victory as this will be their first ODI after the devastating loss to Australia in the World Cup final in Ahmedabad last year.
