India Squad for Sri Lanka Tour 2024: Surya Kumar Yadav, New T20 Captain of India; Rohit & Kohli Return for ODI Series

For the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka later this month, India has appointed Suryakumar Yadav as captain of the men’s T20I team, and Shubman Gill has been chosen vice-captain of both the T20I and ODI teams.

The second-ranked batter in the ICC Men’s T20 Rankings, Surya Kumar Yadav, is not new to this role. He was given the skipper’s role in the India vs. Australia T20I series in 2023.

After leading the squad against Australia and South Africa last year in the absence of key players, the middle-order batsman, who has played 68 T20Is, now takes on responsibility for the shortest format again against Sri Lanka.

The T20I squad looks like it is at its full potential, with numerous T20 World Cup players returning after missing the Zimbabwe series, including Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, and Axar Patel. While players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will play in the one-day internationals, Jasprit Bumrah has been rested from the tour.

The upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka will be Gautam Gambhir’s first task as the team’s new coach. Following Rahul Dravid’s departure, Gambhir assumed this position after Dravid led the side to victory in the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. India will visit Sri Lanka for a bilateral series for the first time since 2021.

Under the direction of their new head coach, India’s T20I team begins a new chapter, after the era of senior players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja, who all left the format after the T20 World Cup victory.

Riyan Parag, who debuted in the T20I series in Zimbabwe, is a member of the ODI team. The wicketkeepers are KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, as Sanju Samson is not included. Alongside Khaleel Ahmed, pacer Harshit Rana, who made an impression during the 2024 Indian Premier League season for the champion Kolkata Knight Riders, is also included in the ODI team.
