The first time India and Afghanistan met in ODIs was in the 2014 Asia Cup at Shere Bangla Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka, on 5 Mar 2014. This match was a one-sided affair in which India won by 8 wickets. The second time these two met again in the Asia Cup in the 2018 edition, and this match was a blockbuster where Afghanistan posted a respective total of 252/8 thanks to the 124-run inning of Mohammad Shahzad.

In response, India started well, but after the departure of their top order, the middle order collapsed. The match was saved by Jadeja’s contribution down the order, but he failed to take India across the line. In the last over, India needed 1 run off 2 balls, but Jadeja was caught at mid-wicket on Rashid Khan’s delivery, and the game was tied as he was the last batter to be dismissed for India. The next two matches between India and Afghanistan were played in the ODI World Cups of 2019 and 2023, which India won comfortably.
