Sri Lanka National Cricket Team vs India National Cricket Team Timeline: ODI

India vs Sri Lanka ODI rivalry is filled with countless memorable encounters. The Sri Lanka national cricket team vs India national cricket team timeline in ODIs started in Old Trafford in the first-ever Men’s ODI World Cup; back then Sri Lanka was an associate member, and their win over India in this match was their announcement of their arrival to the cricket world. The 1996 ODI World Cup semifinal between India and Sri Lanka is known for the unruly crowd behavior.

India was chasing a target and was 120/8 at the moment when the crowd started to throw plastic bottles into the ground. This match was called off by the official, and Sri Lanka was announced as the winner by default. Another memorable encounter between India and Sri Lanka in ODIs occurred in the 2011-2012 Commonwealth Bank Series on Feb 13 2012 in Adelaide Oval. This match was a tie, as Sri Lanka scored 236/9 and restricted India to the same scoreline of 236/9. It is said that Malinga had bowled a five-bowl over in this match, but that was an official’s mistake.

The 2011-2012 Commonwealth Bank Series gave another Ind vs SL ODI match that will remain in the hearts of cricket fans for the upcoming hundreds of years. This match was played in Hobart, and Sri Lanka posted a mammoth score of 320/4 riding on T Dilshan and K Sangakara’s centuries. India needed to chase a 321-run target in 40 overs to make a place in the final of the CB Series 2012. In such a difficult situation, young Kohli stands up and takes charge of the events in his hands.

In this match, Kohli played a knock 133* (86); this inning of Kohli introduced his capabilities and caliber to the world. India chased an almost impossible target thanks to Kohli’s innings, and with this match, the cricket world got a new star named Virat Kohli. In recent times, the India vs Sri Lanka ODI matches have become a one-sided affair, with India winning almost every game. However, the Sri Lankan team has shown some signs of resurgence in ODIs, as they have won the recently concluded 2024 ODI series against India.
