India National Cricket Team vs South Africa National Cricket Team Timeline: ODI
The cricket rivalry between India and South Africa in ODIs is a tale of thurling encounters filled with extraordinary individual efforts. According to the India national cricket team vs South Africa national cricket team timeline in ODIs, the first-ever one-day international cricket match between these two sides was played in Kolkata on 10 November 1991. In the initial years of this rivalry, South Africa dominated India. But after the 2000s, the Indian side improved significantly under the leadership of Sourav Ganguly, and the India-South Africa ODI rivalry became more intense and fierce.
Some memorable moments of this rivalry include master blaster Sachin Tendulkar’s brilliance on the ground. In the 1993 Hero Cup, Sachin took the Indian team to the final by defeating the Proteas in a match where they just needed six runs in the last over. But Tendulkar, being Tendulkar, saved six runs in the last over and scripted one of the all-time great last-over stories in cricket. Another genius moment of Sachin against Proteas took place on 23 February 2010 in Gwalior, where he became the first-ever men cricketer to score a double century in one-day internationals.
The 2011 ODI World Cup match between India and South Africa is counted as an all-time blockbuster match of the ODI World Cups, and in this match, Sachin showed his batting prowess against the Proteas by scoring a century. The opening pair of Sachin and Sehwag wreaked havoc against arguably the best bowling line-up of the world at that time. Sachin & Sehwag put up a 142-run stand in just 18 overs. But after that, the South African bowlers made a great comeback and restricted the Indian team to 296. Eventually, South Africa won this match, but they had to grind up really hard for that victory. The India vs South Africa ODI matches have always been a tightly fought encounter where results can be changed with a small mistake.
