Shreyas Iyer Biography
Early Life and Background
Shreyas Santosh Iyer was born on December 6, 1994, in Chembur, Mumbai, to Santosh Iyer and Rohini Iyer. His ancestors hail from Thrissur, Kerala. Iyer’s cricketing journey began at Don Bosco High School, Matunga, followed by his studies at Ramniranjan Anandilal Podar College of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai. He was discovered at the age of 18 by coach Pravin Amre at Shivaji Park Gymkhana, who played a significant role in developing his skills. Known for his powerful batting, Iyer was often compared to the legendary Virender Sehwag during his youth.
Domestic Career
Shreyas Iyer’s cricketing prowess became evident early on. He made his List A debut for Mumbai in the 2014–15 Vijay Hazare Trophy, amassing 273 runs at an average of 54.60. Later that year, he debuted in the first-class Ranji Trophy, scoring 809 runs at an average of 50.56 and finishing as the 7th highest run-scorer of the season. In the 2015–16 Ranji Trophy, Iyer emerged as the top scorer with 1,321 runs at an impressive average of 73.39, including four centuries.
Iyer continued to impress in domestic cricket with consistent performances. In the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy, he made 725 runs. Iyer recorded a memorable double century (202 not out) against the visiting Australian team in the 2016-17 BGT. By 2018, Iyer was vice-captain for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and led India B in the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy. His record-breaking T20 innings of 147 runs in the 2019 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy set the benchmark for Indian domestic T20 cricket and made him the Indian batter with the highest score in T20 cricket.
International Career
Shreyas Iyer made his international debut in November 2017, featuring for India in a T20I match against New Zealand. His ODI debut followed in December 2017 against Sri Lanka, where he scored an impactful 88 off 70 balls. Iyer’s first ODI century came in February 2020 against New Zealand, where he scored 103 runs off 107 balls.
In November 2021, Iyer achieved a career milestone when he made his Test debut against New Zealand at Kanpur. He marked the occasion with a century in the first innings, becoming the 16th Indian to score a hundred in his debut Test and the first to achieve a century and a half-century in his debut match. His strong performances continued with a maiden Test half-century in the second innings of that match. During the 2022 series against Sri Lanka, Iyer set a new record for the most runs by an Indian batsman in a three-match T20I series, surpassing Virat Kohli’s tally by scoring 204 runs across three unbeaten innings. He was also named ICC Player of the Month in February 2022 for his performances against Sri Lanka.
Despite suffering from back injuries, Iyer made notable comebacks. In October 2022, he scored an unbeaten 113 against South Africa, his second ODI century. He missed the 2022 T20 World Cup but returned to the Indian team for the 2023 Asia Cup and the 2023 Cricket World Cup, where he played a key role. Iyer’s standout moment in the World Cup came during the semi-final against New Zealand, where he scored a century, contributing significantly to India’s victory.
IPL Career
Iyer’s IPL career began in 2015 when he was bought by Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) for 2.6 crore. He showcased his talent by scoring 439 runs in his debut season and won the IPL Emerging Player of the Year award. In 2018, he was named captain of Delhi Daredevils after a mid-season leadership change, becoming the youngest captain in the franchise’s history at 23. Under his captaincy, Delhi made their first playoff appearance in seven years and reached the 2020 IPL final, where they finished runners-up to the Mumbai Indians.
In the 2022 IPL auction, Iyer was purchased by Kolkata Knight Riders for 12.25 crore and appointed captain. Although the team finished 7th in the league that season, Iyer led the side with resilience. In the 2023 IPL, Shreyas Iyer was not part of the action due to a back injury; in his absence, Nitish Rana led the KKR. But in 2024, Iyer returned as captain, leading KKR to the top of the points table and winning the IPL title after defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad by 8 wickets in the final. This victory marked Shreyas Iyer’s first IPL title as captain, making him the 5th Indian to win the IPL trophy as a captain. He became the first captain to lead two different teams (Delhi Capitals in 2020 and KKR in 2024) to the IPL final.
Challenges and Comebacks
Shreyas Iyer’s career has faced its share of challenges, particularly with injuries. In 2021, a shoulder injury kept him out of the IPL for the first half, and he missed the 2021 T20 World Cup as a result. In 2023, he suffered a back injury that ruled him out of the entire season and required surgery. Despite these setbacks, Iyer’s determination saw him return to the national team in time for the Asia Cup and World Cup 2023, where he continued to perform at a high level. Shreyas Iyer’s journey from a promising young talent in Mumbai to an established Indian cricketer and IPL captain is marked by resilience, consistency, and leadership. With his impressive batting and tactical acumen, he has made his mark in domestic, international, and T20 cricket, showcasing his ability to adapt and thrive under pressure.
