Ruturaj Dasharatha Gaikwad is an Indian international cricketer who plays and captains both IPL franchise CSK and the Maharashtra team in domestic cricket. Gaikwad made his international cricket debut in 2021 against Sri Lanka. He held the record for the highest score in international cricket for the Indian team for a very short period of time. He was the leading run scorer in IPL season 2021, winning the orange cap that season. Ruturaj was also part of the Indian team that won the gold medal at the Asian Games 2022; in fact, he was the captain of that team.
Ruturaj has been an integral part of the CSK squad since his breakthrough season in 2021. Since joining CSK, he has won the IPL trophy twice, in 2021 and 2023. Ruturaj Gaikwad was picked by the CSK team in IPL player auction in 2019 and made his IPL debut in the 2020 season against the Rajasthan Royals. In his first IPL season, he played just six matches, scoring 204 runs with an average of 51.00. The 2021 season was his breakthrough season, where he outscored every batter in the league, making 635 runs and winning the Orange Cap that season. Ruturaj Gaikwad Biography & Personal Details
Ruturaj Gaikwad was born on January 31, 1997, in Pargaon Memane village of Saswad area of Pune, Maharashtra. His father, Dasharath Gaikwad, was an employee of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). His mother, Sawita Gaikwad, was a teacher at a municipal school. His primary school was St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Pune, and he did his higher education at Marathvada Mitra Mandal’s Polytechnic College.
At the age of 13, he joined Dilip Vengsarkar’s academy in Pimpri Chinchwad, Pune. In 2015, at the Maharashtra Invitational Tournament, he scored 306 and formed a mammoth 522-run partnership with his teammate Vinay. Gaikwad made his first-class debut in the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy season for Maharashtra.
His List A debut was also in the 2016–17 season Vijay Hazare Trophy. In this tournament, he scored 444 with a tremendous average of 63.42 and 3 half centuries and a century, becoming the third highest run getter in that season.
He was named in the Indian team for the 2018 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup. In the 2019 IPL auction, he was bought by CSK for just 20 lakhs. He joined Team India in 2021, making his international debut for the Indian team in July 2021 against Sri Lanka. In 2023, Gaikwad had become vice captain of the Indian team, assisting a returning Jasprit Bumrah.
In July 2023, he became captain of the Indian team for the 2022 Asian Games and led the team to a gold medal. Gaikwad became the ninth Indian batter to score a century in T20Is when he scored 123* against Australia. His last match for Team India was an ODI in December 2023 against South Africa.
