South Africa is one of the earliest teams to announce their T20 World Cup squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup. They announced their team on April 30, 2024. Aiden Markram, the current skipper of the South Africa t20 squad, will lead the team, which will be his first experience as a captain in an ICC event.
This South African squad has nothing to do with the surprise pick-ups and calls. The South African selectors chose pretty much the exact team that fans had expected. Apart from Anrich Nortje and Quinton De Kock, both players have spent a lot of time off the field. Quinton De Kock has retired from test and one-day cricket, and this could be his last appearance in an ICC event.
Ryan Rickelton and Ottniel Baartman are rewarded for their strong performances in domestic cricket. Rickelton was the leading run-getter in the SA20 tournament, and Bartman was the second-best bowler of the tournament after Marco Jansen.
This South African World Cup squad has everything. They have destructive openers to demolish the bowling team from the first ball. Quinton De Kock, Aiden Markram, and Reeza Hendricks all are capable of destroying opposition bowling units on their own.
In the middle order, David Miller, Henrich Klassen, and Tristun Stubbs are the kind of pinch hitters that can end a game in just one inning. In short, the South African batting unit in this T20 is loaded with power hitters.
The bowling unit of the South Africa T20 squad for this World Cup is as promising as their batting lineup. Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje are nothing short of a nightmare on the fiery hard pitches of the West Indies. Tabrez Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj will lead the spin bowling attack for the Proteas.

After the selection of the team, coach Rob Walter reacted to the squad. “Selecting this group was extremely tough considering the amount of T20 cricket that has been played recently and the form that has been on show. I want to congratulate the two uncapped players, Ryan and Ottniel, on their selection. We have seen some incredible performances from our players in 2024 and that made my job very tough indeed. I am nonetheless proud and confident that we have named the strongest possible squad that no doubt has every chance of success in the West Indies and USA.”
The South African team will start their T20 World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka on June 3. South Africa is placed in Group D with Sri Lanka, Netherlands, Nepal, and Bangladesh.
