Early Life and Introduction to Cricket

Sachin Tendulkar young Sachin Tendulkar Profile - Biography, Age Career Records, Stats, Net Worth and Photos

Sachin spent the early days of his life at Sahitya Sahawas Cooperative Housing Society in Bandra (East). As a young boy, he often picks fights and bullies other children in school. Sachin was introduced to cricket by his elder brother Ajit Tendulkar to curb his tendencies of bullying & fighting. But Sachin’s first love was tennis, not cricket; as a child, he loved to play tennis, idolized American tennis legend John McEnroe, and carried a tennis racket as a symbol of his love for the game. But after meeting Ramakant Achrekar (Sachin’s childhood coach), Sachin dedicated his life to cricket. In 1984, when Sachin was brought to Ramakant Achrekar at Shivaji Park in Dadar, Sachin was unable to impress Achrekar, but his brother asked for another chance, and this time Achrekar was hidden behind a tree to ensure that little Sachin could perform without any pressure.

This time Achrekar recognized the exceptional talent of Sachin and started to train him. Sachin Tendulkar made his debut as a cricketer in the later stage of the year 1984 for Sharadashram Vidyamandir. Along with school cricket, Tendulkar also made his mark in league cricket with John Bright Cricket Club in 1984 in the Kanga Cricket League. In 1987, when Sachin was just 14, he attended the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai to become a fast bowler, but he changed his mind and focused on batting after a suggestion from Australian fast bowling legend Dennis Lille, who was the trainer of the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai at that time.

Sachin got a letter and a pair of pads from Sunil Gavaskar in 1987 with condolences for not receiving the Bombay Cricket Association’s Best Junior Cricketer Award. Later, Sachin said on many occasions in front of cameras that this was the greatest source of encouragement in his life. Tendulkar served as a ballboy during the 1987 World Cup. In 1988, Tendulkar and Kambli created a world record for the biggest partnership in any form of cricket at any level by putting up a 664-run stand together. Sachin and Kambli achieved this feat while playing for Sharadashram Vidyamadir in the Lord Harris Shield inter-school game against St. Xavier’s High School.

Adulthood and cricket career

Initial years

On November 14, 1987, Sachin was selected for Bombay’s Ranji Trophy squad for the 1987-88 season. Sachin made his Ranji Trophy debut for Bombay on 11 December 1988, against Gujarat at Wankhede Stadium, and he scored a century (100*) on his debut to become the youngest Indian to score a century on a first-class debut. Sachin scored a hundred on his Deodhar Trophy debut and Duleep Trophy debut as well. Tendulkar was Bombay’s highest run-getter in the 1988–89 Ranji Trophy season. In this season, he scored 583 runs at an average of 67.77.

Sachin was rewarded for his incredible domestic season by getting selected in the squad for India’s tour of Pakistan in 1989. During this tour’s first test match at Karachi, Sachin Tendulkar made his Test debut against Pakistan on November 14, 1989, at the age of just 16 years and 205 days. At this time, he was the youngest cricketer to debut in test matches, and still, he is the youngest Indian cricketer to debut for team India in tests. Sachin made his ODI debut on the same tour in the 2nd ODI match at Gujarat on December 18, 1989, against Pakistan. He played a knock of 119 not out in the second Test at Old Trafford in Manchester on August 14, 1990, during a tour to England, to become the second-youngest batsman to make a century in a Test match.

During the 1991–92 Australian tour, which was conducted before the 1992 Cricket World Cup, Tendulkar gained more recognition across the world. During the tour, he became the youngest batsman to score a century in Australia when he struck an unbroken 148 in the third Test at Sydney. Then in the last Test at Perth, he struck 114 against a pace attack led by Bruce Reid, Craig McDermott, and Merv Hughes on a fast-moving, bouncy field. At the time, Hughes told Allan Border, “This little prick’s going to get more runs than you, AB.”

Emergence of Sachin on the Horizon of world cricket

In 1994, Tendulkar opened for the first time while facing New Zealand at Auckland and scored 82 runs off 49 balls. On September 9, 1994, in Colombo, he amassed his first century in one-day internationals against Australia. It took him 78 matches to score his first ODI century. But once he reached that milestone he never looked back, Tendulkar’s career continued to rise from there and he was one of the brightest stars of the Indian team at the 1996 World Cup, as he scored two centuries in that tournament. Against the Australian team in the 1998 Coca-Cola Cup, Tendulkar scored 143 (131) runs in Sharjah.

This inning of Sachin was known as the “Desert Storm” because of the sandstorm that interrupted the innings. According to an ICC survey conducted in 2020, it was Tendulkar’s greatest ODI innings. Sachin continued his carnage against the Australian side, as he achieved three consecutive hundreds during an Australian tour of India in early 1998. In 1999, Tendulkar scored 136 runs in the opening Test match of a two-Test series against Pakistan at Chepauk; however, India lost this match by 12 runs. Ramesh Tendulkar, Sachin’s father, passed away during the 1999 Cricket World Cup. Tendulkar skipped the game against Zimbabwe in order to return to India for his father’s last rites and return for the very next encounter, against Kenya in Bristol. In the match against Kenya, he made a century (140 not out of 101 balls) and dedicated it to his father.

The captaincy saga

Despite being a legendary figure in Indian cricket, Sachin is not considered a great captain. Tendulkar served the Indian team as captain for two tenures from 1996 to 2000. Under Sachin’s captaincy team, India played 25 tests but won only four and lost nine, for a win ratio of only 16%. Sachin’s ODI captaincy numbers are good compared to the test; he led the Indian team in 73 one-day internationals. With 23 wins, 43 losses, and 2 tied matches, Sachin’s winning ratio as a captain in ODIs was 31.50%.

Achieving legendary status

The Ind vs Aus 2001 Kolkata test match is considered to be one of the greatest test matches ever in the history of cricket. India won this match after being forced to follow on, and this was only the third incident in tests when a team won a test match after being forced to follow on. Sachin didn’t contribute much in this test match with the bat, but he played an important role in India’s win with the ball. Sachin took three wickets on the last day of this test match, including the key wickets of Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist. The 2003 World Cup was the best World Cup of Sachin’s career. In this tournament, he scored 673 runs in 11 matches and won the Man of the Tournament Award, although the Indian team lost the final against Australia.

In this World Cup, Sachin played the immortal knock against Pakistan; during this inning, he played the iconic shot-over point on a delivery of Shoaib Akhtar. On the 2003-04 India Tour of Australia, Sachin played his career’s best innings in the Sydney test. In Sydney, Sachin scored 241 not out from 436 balls with 33 fours at a strike rate of 55.27. He batted 613 minutes in the Sydney test match to bring India to an almost unbeatable position. Sachin carried his form to the 2004-05 India tour of Pakistan and scored an unbeaten 194 in Multan; only a declaration from Dravid stopped him from scoring 200. During the 2008 Australian tour of India, Sachin broke Brian Lara’s record of most runs in tests after passing Lara’s 11,953-run milestone. In 2010, Sachin added another feather to his hat after becoming the first man in cricket to score a double hundred in one-day internationals. Sachin attained this record against South Africa in Gwalior.

Twilight time of career & retirement

In 2011, Sachin achieved what he wanted; his dreams turned into reality; he got for what he started to play cricket; and he had finally won the World Cup. In the 2011 World Cup triumph of India, Sachin played a massive role by amassing 482 runs at an average of 53.55, including two centuries. He was the second-highest scorer in this tournament after Tillakaratne Dilshan. After the World Cup win, Tendulkar achieved another unimaginable milestone in cricket, the “100 of 100s” or “century of centuries.” On 16 March 2012, Sachin made his 100th international century against Bangladesh in an ODI match at Mirpur, Dhaka. On 10 October 2013, Sachin announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. He played his career’s last match at his home ground, Wankhede. In his last match, against the West Indies, Sachin played a 74-run inning.
