Top 10 Batsman Fastest 200 in ODI

A 100 in any format is a huge milestone for any cricketer. However, it becomes difficult with limited overs, but with time, batsmen are going for big centuries. This is why in recent years, many double hundreds have been registered in the ODI, i.e., One Day International cricket.

The God of Cricket and our very own Master Blaster, Sachin Tendulkar was the first person to score a double hundred in the ODI format. However, several other batsmen have achieved double centuries in ODI after him. Interestingly, the chart for the fastest 200 in ODI is mostly dominated by our Indian players, including three by the Hitman Rohit Sharma alone. While Ishan Kishan tops the chart, several other players are on the list.

1. Ishan Kishan (126 balls) vs BAN, 2022:

It was during the Indian tour of Bangladesh in the 3-ODI bilateral series. In the 3rd ODI, on 10 December 2022, Ishan Kishan broke the 7-year-old record of Chris Gayle by smashing 200 runs for 126 deliveries. The total score of Ishan was 210 runs, including 131 deliveries,  24 fours and 10 sixes, along with a strike rate of 160.30. The total score of India that day was 409 for 8 wickets and out of the set target, Bangladesh could manage to chase only 182 for all wickets down. Moreover, for outstanding performance, Ishan Kishan was also felicitated with the Player of the Match award in this match. 

2. Glenn Maxwell (128 balls) vs AFG, 2023:

During the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, Australia faced Afghanistan for an ODI match on 7 November 2023. On this day, Glenn Maxwell, despite suffering from cramps and spasms,  scored a remarkable 201* runs for just 128 deliveries, thus registering the second-fastest 200 in ODI. This century included 21 fours and 10 sixes, along with a strike rate of 157.03. Afghanistan scored 291/5 and gave a target of 292 runs to mighty Australia, which after half the side in the pavilion. Thanks to the Maxwell valiant double century which made Aus chased down in the 46.5 over itself. This knock made Maxwell win the Player of the Match award. 

3. Pathum Nissanka (136 balls) vs AFG, 2024:

Pathum Nissanka, the Sri Lankan batsman, holds the record for the third-fastest 200 in ODI. He achieved 200* runs in 136 deliveries during the Afghanistan tour of Sri Lanka in 2024. His total score of 210 runs in 139 deliveries was registered on 9 February 2024 and includes 20 fours and 8 sixes, along with the strike rate of 151.07. On this day, Sri Lanka registered a score of 381/3, giving a target of 3822 runs to the Afghans. Afghanistan, on the other side, managed to secure 339/6, leading the Lankan Lions to win the 1st ODI of the series by 422 runs. Pathum was also felicitated with the Player of the Match award for his knock and 2 catches. 

4. Chris Gayle (138 balls) vs ZIM, 2015:

Chris Gayle is the first batsman to register a double century in ODI Cricket World Cup. It was during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 when Gayle scored 200 runs in 138 deliveries on 24 February 2015. No doubt how he brought the ‘Gayle Storm” that day because his total score included 215 runs off 147 deliveries, 10 fours, and 16 sixes, along with a strike rate of 146.25. West Indies scored 372/2, while Zimbabwe (through the DLS method) managed to score 289 with all wickets down. Therefore, WI won the match against Zimbabwe by 73 runs and Chris Gayle was announced as the Player of the Match for his outstanding performance. 

5. Virender Sehwag (140 balls) vs WI, 2011:

Virender Sehwag is the second batsman to reach the fastest 200 in ODI. During the 4th ODI of the West Indies tour of India 2011, Sehwag took 140 deliveries to reach 200 runs on 8 December 2011, at Indore, finishing at 219 runs off 149 balls. Captain at that time, Sehwag’s knock led India to win the match by 153 runs. The score of India was 418/5, while West Indies managed to secure 265 with all wickets down. Sehwag’s score included 25 fours and 7 sixes, along with a strike rate of 146.97. This knock also made him win the Player of the Match award. 

6. Shubman Gill (145 balls) vs NZ, 2023:

India hosted New Zealand for the ODI series from 18 January 2023 to 24 January 2023. In the 1st ODI on 18 January 2023, the “Prince of Cricket”, Shubman Gill scored 200 runs out of 145 deliveries, including a total score of 208 in 149 deliveries, 19 fours, and 9 sixes, along with a strike rate of 139.59. On this day, India scored 349/8, while New Zealand was able to chase 337 runs for all wickets down, leading the Indian team to win the match by 12 runs. Moreover, for his exceptional performance, Gill was also declared the Player of the Match. 

7. Sachin Tendulkar (147 balls) vs SA, 2010:

Sachin Tendulkar, the “God of Cricket” is the first person to smash the fastest 200 in ODI. Having held almost all the batting records in cricket history, he smashed this double century against South Africa during their Indian tour in 2010. He registered the score of 200 runs in 147 deliveries on 24 February 2010 in Gwalior. It was the 2nd ODI when he smashed the double century, including 25 fours and 3 sixes, along with a strike rate of 136.05. On this day, India scored 401/3, while the Africans managed to chase 248 runs with all wickets down. Moreover, for his tremendous performance, Sachin Tendulkar was also felicitated with the Player of the Match award. 

8. Fakhar Zaman (148 balls) vs ZIM, 2018:

Pakistan hosted Zimbabwe for a 5-ODI match series. On 20 July 2018, in Bulawayo, during the 4th ODI match of the series between both teams, Fakhar Zaman registered 200* runs in 148 deliveries, including 24 fours and 5 sixes, along with a strike rate of 134.61. On this day, Pakistan scored 399/1, with Fakhar Zaman finishing at 201* for 156 balls, while Zimbabwe managed to chase only 155 runs with all wickets down, leading Pakistan to win the match by 244 runs. Moreover, due to his remarkable performance, Fakhar Zaman was announced the Player of the Match. 

9. Rohit Sharma (151 balls) vs SL, 2014:

This record came during the Sri Lanka tour of India. It was the 4th ODI at Kolkata on 13 November 2014 when Rohit Sharma smashed 200 runs for 151 deliveries, including 33 fours and 9 sixes, along with a strike rate of 152.60. India scored 404/5, including the highest 264 runs of Rohit Sharma in 173 balls, while Sri Lanka managed to secure 251 runs with all wickets down, leading India to win the 4th ODI by 153 runs. Furthermore, due to the brilliant knock, Rohit was announced as the Player of the Match. 

10. Rohit Sharma (151 balls) vs SL, 2017:

During the 2nd ODI of the Sri Lanka tour of India, on 13 December 2017, Rohit Sharma again smashed one of the fastest 200 in ODI. He smashed 200 runs for 151 deliveries, finishing at 208* runs in 153 deliveries, including 13 fours and 12 sixes, with a strike rate of 135.94. On this day, India scored 392/4, while Sri Lanka could secure 251/8, leading India to win the match by 141 runs. Moreover, for his memorable knock, our very own Hitman was felicitated with the Player of the Match award.
