Tim Southee Resigns from the New Zealand Team’s Test Captaincy

Tim Southee has stepped down as the country’s Test captain, with Tom Latham set to take over test captaincy full-time. The news came after only a few days had passed since New Zealand’s 2-0 defeat in the Test series in Sri Lanka. Latham’s first job as a full-time skipper will be in the forthcoming Test series against India.

Since making his debut for the team in 2008, Southee has been the leading pacer for New Zealand, participated in 102 Test matches, and taken 382 wickets. After replacing Kane Williamson as captain in December 2022, he captained the team through 14 Test matches, won 6, lost 6, and drew 2.

Southee explained that his decision to stand down was made in the best interests of the team. “Captaining the BLACKCAPS in a format that’s so special to me has been an absolute honor and a privilege. I’ve always tried to prioritize the team during my career, and I believe this decision is best for the squad.“

“I feel that focusing on my performance on the field and returning to my best will allow me to continue taking wickets and helping New Zealand win Test matches. I will continue to encourage my teammates, particularly the promising young bowlers emerging on the international stage. I wish Tom the best of luck in his new post, and he knows I’ll be there to support him along the way, just as he has for me over the years,” Southee said.

Gary Stead, New Zealand’s head coach, added: “Tim is a tremendous player and a great leader who is highly regarded by the players and support staff. He’s been an outstanding servant of New Zealand Cricket for nearly 17 years on the international scene, and I’d like to recognize his humility in stepping down as Test captain.

“It’s not easy to give up something you enjoy, but Tim is a great team player who made the decision with the team’s best interests in mind. He’s one of our finest ever players, and we expect him to continue to play a role in our Test team in the future.”
