Shubman Gill will be brandishing the captain’s armband for India in the near future for the five-Test series versus England, as both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have recently called it quits on Test cricket. Gill is just 25 years old and can bring a fresh approach to the captaincy. Gill indicated that his focus his on building relationships with players, speaking with them openly, and leading them in his own way.
In IPL 2025, as Captain for the Gujarat Titans, Gill has grown in maintaining a calm composure and encouraging cohesion in his team, and said he will do so in the Indian team as well. He explained that he will do his best to get to know each player individually and create an environment that provides a support system to allow the best possible team to play freely and have complete confidence in their performance.
Even with that type of pressure, remaining unpretentious, Gill understands his role, but has made it clear that he is committed to remaining true to himself and will do it his way. He has always been results-oriented for himself and others, considering team results, so that leading does not take precedence over what is really important: game wins.
Shubman said, “There is no particular style of captaincy that I want to follow. The more you play, the more experience you get. I think your personal style is more visible to the people. What I like is communication with the players, making the players feel secure, talking to them, giving them comfort around their weaknesses and strengths.”
Gill’s leadership ideas are based on originality and conviction. Williamson was able to experience Gill’s leadership for a short period while playing for Gill’s franchise team Gujarat Titans. Williamson stated that when Gill speaks, he speaks with meaning, which makes Gill’s voice count.
In direct response to a question related to the batting order and bowling lineup, Gill stated that the management had not given a fix to the matter yet but that it would be decided somewhere in the run-up to the first Test, which commences on June 20, after preparations begin in and around London. His position in the batting order and the identification of the successor to Kohli at No.4 remain uncertain.
“We haven’t really decided on the [batting order], we still have some time,” he said. “We will be playing an intra-squad match [from June 13 to 16] and I think we will be having a 10-day camp in London. So we still have a little bit of time, and I think we can decide on the batting order once we go there.”
As India enters a new phase as they face England in Test cricket, Shubman Gill’s captaincy is combined with youthful enthusiasm and long-term planning, hoping to motivate the team to new heights on the international stage. The WTC final is two years away, so a lot rides on Gill’s strong shoulders.
