Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) put on a strong performance to chase down 206 at ease for a six-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Match 61 of the Indian Premier League at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium.
Chasing 206, SRH were rocked by Abhishek Sharma’s (20 balls) 59 runs, taking four fours and six sixes at a breathtaking strike rate of 295.00. Sharma got SRH off to a magnificent start, helping the visitors to 100 in just eight overs. Against the relentless batting, Sharma was justifiably the Player of the Match.
Also helping the SRH chase were Ishan Kishan (35 runs from 28 balls), Heinrich Klaasen (47 runs from 28 balls), and Kamindu Mendis who made a scoring 32 runs in quick time but retired hurt. The chase took only 17.4 overs against the bowling attack of LSG, SRH scored at a remarkable pace and finished with 10 balls to spare in incredible fashion.
Earlier, LSG put up a competitive 205/7 after being asked to bat first. Mitchell Marsh (65 off 39) and Aiden Markram (61 off 38) put on an opening stand worthy of 115 and gave LSG good shape early on with Nicholas Pooran spirited fifty to close out. However, they stuttered late losing 4 wickets for just 11 runs in the last 2 overs.
Even with the competitive total, LSG bowlers lacked teeth. Digvesh Rathi was the only bowler to show promise with 2 for 37. Their defenders bowled a range of expensive spells including star boy Ravi Bishnoi who gave up 26 in his 1 over spell.
The win moves SRH to 8th on the points table and holds alive their hopes of qualifying for the playoffs, whereas LSG now sit 7th and have to win all their remaining matches.
The match encapsulated IPL’s uncertainty and the emergence of future superstars Abhishek Sharma.
