Suryakumar, Santner, Bumrah Star as MI Seal Playoff Berth with Dominant Win Over DC

Mumbai Indians (MI) stormed into the IPL 2025 playoffs with a commanding 59-run win over Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Wankhede Stadium, thanks to a scintillating unbeaten 73 from Suryakumar Yadav and clinical bowling displays by Mitchell Santner and Jasprit Bumrah.

Opting to field first on a spin-friendly pitch, DC initially managed to keep MI in check, with Kuldeep Yadav and Vipraj Nigam applying pressure through the middle overs. MI were 132 for 5 in the 17th over, seemingly headed for a below-par total. But Suryakumar Yadav and Naman Dhir unleashed carnage in the final two overs, plundering 48 runs to take MI to 180/5. Suryakumar smashed 28 runs off his last eight balls, while Dhir chipped in with a rapid 24* off just 8 deliveries.

Earlier, MI’s innings had stuttered after losing Rohit Sharma early, with Mukesh Kumar and Dushmantha Chameera among the wickets. Kuldeep marked his 100th IPL scalp, while Nigam impressed with a miserly spell. However, their efforts were undone by the late MI onslaught.

In reply, DC’s chase never found momentum. Openers KL Rahul and Faf du Plessis fell cheaply, and Will Jacks struck in his first over to remove Abishek Porel. At 49/3 after the powerplay, DC were already on the back foot, with MI tightening their grip.

Mitchell Santner turned the screws in the middle overs, taking 3 for 11 – one of the most economical four-over spells by a spinner at Wankhede. He dismissed the dangerous Vipraj Nigam with a smart caught-and-bowled and later accounted for Ashutosh Sharma and Sameer Rizvi to decimate the middle order.

Jasprit Bumrah cleaned up the tail with his trademark precision, claiming 3 for 12 in just 3.2 overs. The DC were bowled out for 121 in 18.2 overs, crashing out of playoff contention after winning only two of their last nine games, following a strong 4-0 start to the season.

With this win, MI secured the final playoff spot, their 11th appearance in 18 seasons. Suryakumar Yadav was adjudged Player of the Match for his match-defining knock.
