Sri Lanka has announced the T20I squad for the upcoming home series against India. Charith Aslanka is named the new captain in place of Wanindu Hasranga.
Wanindu Hasaranga decided to resign from his position after the disappointing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup last month, therefore Charith Asalanka is called to fill his shoes.
Under Hasaranga’s leadership, Sri Lanka won only one match in the T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies, that too against the associate nation the Netherlands in their last group match, when they had no chance of making it to the Super Eight round.
Asalanka returns in the role of skipper after leading the team in two T20Is against Bangladesh earlier this year while Hasaranga was suspended.
With the experienced pair of Angelo Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva dropping out of the squad entirely after participating in Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup campaign, that’s why Aslanka is chosen to lead the team.
Sadeera Samarawickrama and Dilshan Madhushanka are also dropped from the squad, as selectors choose to include players like Chamindu Wickramasinghe, Binura Fernando, and Avishka Fernando in their place.
Veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Chandimal also returns to the Sri Lankan squad for the India T20I series. If selected in the playing XI against India, Chandimal will play his first T20I since February 2022.
The series consists of three T20 matches, and the first game will be played on July 27, while the other two games are scheduled for July 28 and July 30. All three matches will be played at Pallekele Cricket Stadium.
