Former Australian domestic cricketer Matthew Mott has been appointed the assistant coach of Delhi Capitals for the 2025 IPL. Mott is set to join the support staff of DC that has Hemang Badani in the role of head coach, Munaf Patel as bowling coach, and Venugopal Rao in the position of Director of Cricket.
This is going to be Mott’s second job experience in the IPL. His first IPL contract as a coach was also as an assistant coach under John Buchanan, that time’s head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders, from 2008 to 2009. The most highlighted job experience on Mott’s CV was as white ball coach of the England men’s cricket team. Mott left this position in July of last year.
Mott, who played cricket for Queensland and Victoria in the 1990s and early 2000s, had stints on the Australian and English domestic circuits after retiring and then became head coach of the Australian women’s national team from 2015 to 2020.
After leaving the England white-ball position, Mott signed a three-year contract in September to become an assistant coach for the Sydney Sixers in the BBL. As a coach, Mott holds the unique record of winning both the men’s and women’s T20 World Cups.
After letting go of most of the high-profile players and keeping only Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Tristan Stubbs, and Abishek Porel, DC, who have only ever advanced to the IPL final once in all these years—in 2020—finished sixth in the IPL 2024 and entered the auction last year with the largest purse of all ten teams. They haven’t yet chosen their captain, but they have added elite players like Mitchell Starc, Faf du Plessis, Harry Brook, and KL Rahul.
