On the fourth day of the first Test match at Multan, England broke numerous records against Pakistan. Harry Brook (317) and Joe Root (262), two Yorkshiremen, led England’s enormous declared total of 823/7. Below is a summary of the day’s main achievements.
6th Triple Centurion for England
In Test cricket, Brook is the sixth player from England to make a triple century; the previous one was Graham Gooch in 1990. His inning of 317 is now the fourth-highest knock against Pakistan and the fifth-highest individual score for England in Test matches.

2nd Fastest Triple Century
With 310 balls needed to reach 300, Brook’s triple century is the second fastest in history, only surpassed by Virender Sehwag’s 278-ball score against South Africa in 2008 in Chennai. Brook has taken 118 balls for his first 100 runs, 127 balls for the next hundred runs, and for 200 to 300 runs, he has taken only 65 balls.
5th Player to Score a Triple Century Batting at no. 5 or Below
Brook became the fifth batsman to reach three hundred runs while batting at number five or lower. Michael Clarke, who scored an undefeated 329 against India in Sydney in 2012, was the only player to score more runs than Harry Brook in this position. The previous record for the top score by an England player batting number five or below was 287, set by Regie “Tip” Foster in 1903 during his debut match against Australia.
4th Highest Partnership for any Wicket in Tests
The partnership of 454 between Joe Root and Harry Brook stands as the fourth-highest partnership for any wicket in Test history, the highest partnership for 4th wicket or lower, the highest partnership for England, and the highest partnership for any wicket against Pakistan. The only other duo to record a 400+ partnership in Test cricket for England was Colin Cowdrey and Peter May, who combined for 411 against the West Indies at Edgbaston in 1957.

3rd Instance of two Batters Scoring 250+ Runs in the Same Inning
Three times in one inning, two batters have scored more than 250 runs. The first two players to accomplish this feat were Gary Sobers (365*) and Conard Hunte (260) against Pakistan in Kingston in 1958. Mahela Jayawardene (374) and Kumar Sangakkara (287) against South Africa at Colombo SSC in 2006 were the second pair to do it. Now, Harry Brook (317) and Joe Root (262) are the third batting pair to reach this landmark.
2nd English Pair to hit Double Centuries in the Same Innings
Root and Brook are the second English duo to score a double hundred in the same inning, after Graeme Fowler (201) and Mike Gatting (207), who achieved this feat against India in Chennai in 1985.

Double Hundred in 5 Countries
With his 262 runs knock against Pakistan in the Multan Test, Root now recorded a double hundred in five different countries; only Kumar Sangakkara and Younis Khan have scored in more nations, with six each, while Brian Lara has scored in five. Root also became the first non-Asian cricketer to score double centuries in India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan.
4th Instance of a Team Putting up 800+ total
In the history of tests, there are only four instances of a team scoring 800 or more points. The last time this happened was in the Colombo RPS in 1997, where Sri Lanka scored 952/6 against India.
The greatest total England has ever achieved in tests is still 903/7 registered against Australia at the Oval in 1938. The previous total against Pakistan was 790/3, which West Indies made in Kingston in 1958.
