August 2024’s ICC Women’s Player of the Month (Winner Announced)

Sri Lanka’s emerging talent named the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for August 2024

ICC Women’s Player of the Month, August 2024: Sri Lanka’s Harshitha Madavi won the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for August 2024. The Southpaw is again in the headlines, first for leading her team to her maiden Asia Cup title and now by claiming her position as the player of the month.

The left-handed top-order batter surpassed Irish players Orla Prendergast and Gaby Lewis to claim this title. This victory marks the second time a Sri Lankan women’s cricketer won the title in 2024, following the Southpaw Chamari Athapaththu’s wins in May and July.

While Madavi won the ICC Women’s Player of the Month, young all-rounder Dunith Wellalage of Sri Lanka won the ICC Men’s Cricket Player of the Month for August 2024. This rare double win has made the moment proud for Sri Lankans.

Following her arrival in Dublin, Madavi produced excellence, finishing the two-match series as the top run scorer for both sides with career-best efforts of 86* and 65 from the two T20I matches. This came after Madavi’s great performance in the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup final where she bagged 69* against India in the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup final

The 26-year-old Madavi enhanced her performance in two Twenty20 International matches in the three-match ODI series in Dublin, scoring 19, 105, and 48*. With a century in the second ODI match, she has become the third Sri Lankan player to achieve a century in an ODI after Chamari Athapaththu and Vishmi Gunaratne.

On her achievement, the batter said, “I am extremely happy with this recognition, which I consider a new high in my career”. It certainly gives me a lot of confidence ahead of the big competition, the Women’s T20 World Cup.”

Madavi attributed her achievement to her teammates, coaches, parents, sisters, brothers, friends, and mentors and thanked them for being a strong pillar in her journey.  She further added, “I also wish to commend players who were nominated alongside me for the Player of the Month award”. They are immensely talented, and I loved competing with such quality.”
