Top 20 Highest Team Score in ODI History

With a massive 498 runs against the Netherlands in the Amstelveen, the England cricket team holds the record for the highest score in ODI cricket history.

In limited-overs cricket, cricket teams‘ batting abilities have taken on a new high significantly during the last 20 years. In recent years, 350+ scores have been the new norm in One-Day International cricket. The game now seems to be severely stacked in favour of the batsmen due to shorter boundaries, higher-quality bats, and the introduction of the dual-ball rule.

Generally speaking, batsmen have outwitted bowlers and made them work hard for every wicket. As a result, team totals in the 50-over format have increased gradually over the years.

Top 5 Teams With Highest Totals in ODI

Here you can explore the top 5 highest team scores in ODI in depth-

1. England vs Netherlands (17 June, 2022) – 498/4

In a game against the Netherlands in Amstelveen, England scored a record-breaking 498 runs in an innings. With Phil Salt and Jos Buttler leading the way, England displayed a forceful batting strategy when batting first. The importance of power hitting in the current game was highlighted by Buttler’s spectacular 162 off just 70 balls, which helped England set an undefeated record.

2. England vs Australia, Nottingham (19 June, 2018) –  481/6

Between 2015 and 2019, England achieved three of the top ten highest scores in One-Day International (ODI) cricket. England defeated their most powerful opponent, Australia, by six wickets, and amassed 481 runs. With scores of 82 and 139, respectively, Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow took the lead early on, but Alex Hales struck a devastating 147 runs off of just 92 deliveries. Captain Eoin Morgan also participated in the action, scoring 67 runs in a mere 30 deliveries.

England appeared certain to score more than 500 runs, but wickets in the last overs prevented them from doing so. Later on, Morgan’s boys will win the game by 242 runs.

3. England vs Pakistan, Nottingham (30 Aug, 2016) – 443/3

The record stood for ten years before 2016 when Sri Lanka scored a mountain of 443 against the Netherlands. However on August 30, 2016, at Trent Bridge, the record was broken when Eoin Morgan’s side scored 443 for the loss of three wickets versus a rather depleted Pakistani attack.

England had smashed 59 fours and 16 sixes in their innings. Again the front-runner was Alex Hales, who scored 171 of 122 deliveries. While that made him the top scorer for his side, Jos Buttler’s not-out 90 took England’s total over the earlier record and was well supported by Joe Root and Morgan, who made 85 and 57 not out respectively.

4. Sri Lanka vs Netherlands, Amstelveen (4 July, 2006) – 443/9

In this match, Sri Lanka batted first and created a then record for the highest total scored in ODI cricket by scoring as many as 443 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. The showman Sanath Jayasuriya was really on the top of his game as he led the scoring with a brilliant score of 157 runs. The Netherlands could not keep pace with the big total, managing to score just 248 runs for their innings. Sri Lanka cruised in, winning by 195 runs and asserting their dominance in the limited-overs format.

5. South Africa vs West Indies, Wanderers Stadium (18 Jan 2015) – 439/2

South Africa played against the West Indies in the ODI game in Johannesburg on January 18, 2015. Batting first, the team put up a massive 439 for just 2 wickets courtesy AB de Villiers who smashed 149 runs off only 44 deliveries. Hashim Amla scored 153 runs. The West Indies had produced a good fight but had only been able to score 291 runs, and this was enough for South Africa to win with an innings margin of 148 runs. In the annals of cricket history, it is an iconic match because of the explosive batting, and that also claimed the superiority of the South Africans in the one-day game.
