Rahul Dravid Biography & International Career

Time and Place of Birth

Rahul Dravid was born into a Brahmin family of Marathi origin in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on 11 January 1973. Dravid’s father’s name is Sharad Dravid, and his mother, Pushpa, was a professor of architecture at the Visvesvaraya College of Engineering in Bangalore, which is one of the reasons why the Dravid family moved to Bengaluru.

Early life & fascination with cricket

Rahul was a young boy when his family moved to Bengaluru from Indore. In Bengaluru, Dravid gained his high school education from St. Joseph’s Boys High School. Later, he earned a degree in commerce from St. Joseph’s College of Commerce. Dravid was also pursuing an MBA at the St. Joseph’s College of Business Administration, but life had another plan for him. At the age of 12, Dravid started playing cricket. Sooner he represented Karnataka at the under-15, the under-17, and the under-19 levels. Dravid’s talent was noticed by the former Indian cricketer Keki Tarapore, who was coaching at a summer camp in the Chinnaswamy Stadium

The initial phase of career and domestic cricket

Rahul Dravid was in college when he made his Ranji Trophy debut in February 1991. He scored 82 runs against Maharashtra in his first Ranji game while playing alongside the future national teammates Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath. He followed it up with a century against Bengal and three successive centuries after. 1991-92 was his first full Ranji season, and he finished it with 380 runs at an average of 63.30 and two hundreds. This performance of Dravid earned him a place in the South Zone cricket team in the Duleep Trophy of the 1991-92 season. After this, Rahul gave stellar performances on a regular basis in domestic cricket, but he caught the attention of national selectors in a home series against England A in 1994–95.

Debut and early international career

After giving consistent performances in domestic cricket, Dravid received his first national call in October 1994 for the last two matches of the Wills World Series. However, Rahul Dravid was not picked up for the playing XI in this series. Rahul had to wait for another two years to mark his arrival in international cricket. Rahul Dravid’s international debut occurred on 3 April 1996 against Sri Lanka in the Singer Cup. Dravid’s ODI debut was not that good, but in contrast, he performed pretty well in his test debut. Dravid played an important inning of 95 runs in his debut match at Lord’s on 20 June 1996. After his successful test debut, Dravid rapidly became an important part of the Indian test team; however, his fortunes in the shorter format of the game were not as good as in the test, as he was struggling to get himself fit in the Indian ODI squad.

Rahul got his maiden Test hundred in the third test of India’s tour of South Africa in 1996-97. Dravid continued his exceptional test form throughout the year and ended 1996-97 as the batsman with the most runs in tests. During the 1998-99 Test season, Dravid continued his purple path in tests, as he scored 752 runs in seven Tests at an average of 62.66, which included four hundred. In the process, he topped the runs chart for India for the season. On one side, Rahul was achieving new milestones day by day with his batting brilliance in tests, and on the other side, his performance in ODIs contrasted with his test tenure. Dravid’s fortune in ODIs changed with the 1998-99 New Zealand tour. In this series, he was the top run-getter with 309 runs from five games at an average of 77.25 and a strike rate of 84.65. In the first match of this tour, Dravid smashed a run-a-ball hundred. In the 1998/99 Pepsi Cup at Nagpur, Dravid scored another ODI century of his career against Sri Lanka.

Taking up gloves and rising through the ranks

Dravid took wicket-keeping duties in the third match of the 1998–99 Coca-Cola Cup against England as a standing wicketkeeper for Nayan Mongia. In his first match as a wicketkeeper, he was involved in the two dismissals. In 1999, Rahul Dravid was picked up for the World Cup squad of India. The 1999 ODI World Cup established Dravid as a superstar in international cricket. In the 1999 World Cup, Dravid was the highest run scorer. In 2000, Dravid was appointed vice-captain of the Indian team because Ganguly, who vacated this post, became the new captain of the Indian team after Sachin Tendulkar’s resignation. In the 2000 ICC Knock Out Trophy, India reached the final, and Dravid performed well in this tournament with 157 runs in 4 matches at an average of 52.33, including 2 fifties. After a successful vice captain stint, Dravid was appointed the captain of the Indian team for the first time in the fifth match of an ODI Series of the Zimbabwe tour of India in 2000–01, as Ganguly was serving a suspension.

Peak years and achievements

Dravid’s international career peaked in 2001. In the year 2001, Dravid was the best test batsman of India with 839 runs at an average of 104.87 across six matches. Rahul Dravid’s career turned towards greatness from the 2001 Australia Tour of India. In the first test match of the 2000-01 Border Gavaskar Trophy, Dravid showed a strong resilience with the bat alongside Sachin Tendulkar, but India lost that match. The second test match of the 2000-01 Border Gavaskar Trophy was played at Eden Gardens, and this test match was a pivotal point in the history of Indian cricket itself. With a win in this match, India not only breaks the 16-match winning streak of Australia in tests but their dominance also over the game. In the 2000-01 Eden Gardens Test, India was bowled out for a mere 171 runs in the first innings and was forced to follow on. After that, it was the Laxman & Dravid show that snatched all the limelight of the game. Laxman, who had made fifty runs in the first inning, was moved up to the no. 3 spot, which had been Dravid’s usual spot, while Dravid, who had been bowled out by Warne in the first inning in just 25 runs for the second time in a row, was demoted to the no. 6 position. On the third day of the Test, when Dravid and Laxman joined each other at the crease, the scoreboard was showing 232/4, with India still needing 42 runs to avoid the inning defeat.

Dravid and Laxman batted out the remainder of the third day and the entire fourth, as Australia failed to claim any wicket on the fourth day of the Kolkata test. Finally, on the fifth day’s morning, Laxman was out, ending the 376-run partnership. Laxman got out on 281 while Rahul Dravid got a score of 180 runs. With 75 overs remaining in the match, Ganguly declared the innings at 657/7, giving Australia a target of 384 runs. Australia was bowled out for 212 runs in 68.3 overs by India. The Indian team won this test match by a margin of 171 runs. India became the second team to win a Test after following on, which was only the third time this had happened.

2002 to 2006 was the purple patch of Rahul Dravid’s international career. During this time, Dravid scored 8,914 runs at an average of 54.02 from 174 matches, making him the second-highest scorer overall and India’s leading scorer across all forms. He also had 19 hundred during this stint. During this period, Dravid made his second World Cup appearance in the 2003 ODI World Cup. This tournament proved to be a fruitful event for both Dravid and the Indian team, as India reached the final of the World Cup for the first time since 1983, and Dravid made his mark in the tournament with 318 runs at an average of 63.60 and 16 dismissals (15 catches, 1 stumping). The 2003–04 cricket season saw Dravid topping the runs tally across the formats with 1,993 runs from 31 matches at an average of 64.29, including 3 double-hundreds. During the 2003-04 India tour of Pakistan, Dravid was India’s highest run scorer in the ODI series, amassing 248 runs at a strike rate of 73.59 and an average of 62.00. He also claimed four dismissals behind the wicket (3 catches & 1 stumping).

In March 2005, Pakistan played a bilateral Test and one-day international series in India. In the three-test match series, Dravid amassed two hundred and fifty as both sides finished even at a score of 1-1. During the second test of Pakistan’s 2005 tour of India, Dravid scored hundreds in both innings in Eden Gardens (110 in the first innings and 135 in the second innings) and became just the second Indian and the ninth person to ever score two hundred in the same test two or more times. The lowest point of Dravid’s career came in 2007 when he was captaining the Indian team, which was eliminated from the group stages after losing to Minnows Bangladesh.

Final years & Retirement

In the later years of his career, Dravid was struggling with his form. Dravid made three hundreds on India’s disastrous 2011 tour to England, a 4–0 defeat that forfeited them the number one spot in Test cricket. Due to his poor performances in ODIs, Dravid was excluded from the 50-over format team in 2009, but later he was called up for the 2011 ODI series against England, which proved to be his last series in 50-over format. After getting selected for this series, Dravid announced his retirement, and on September 16, 2011, he played his final ODI innings at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff against England. Before being knocked out by Graeme Swann, he scored 69 runs off 79 balls. Dravid called off his T20I career with the start of the 2011 Tour of England. The only T20I match between India and England in 2011 was Rahul Dravid’s debut in T20Is and last match as well because he had already announced retirement from the shortest format of cricket before his debut. Dravid hanged his shoes from all forms of international cricket on 9 March 2012, after the 2011–12 tour of Australia. At the time of his retirement, he was the second-highest run-getter in Test cricket and had the record of taking most catches in tests.
