Indian star batsman Rohit Sharma now has a new feather in his cap, as he has achieved the top spot in ODI batsman rankings for the first time, upstaging Virat Kohli. The experienced opener, who has been among the leading scorers for more than a decade, rose to the top spot after his player-of-the-series performance in his side’s ODI series over Australia.
Rohit was brilliant throughout the series, playing a match-winning knock of 73 in the second ODI and an unbeaten 121 off 105 balls in the third match at Sydney. India may have lost the three-match series 2-1, but his captain’s consistency and leadership with the bat were enough to propel him up in the ICC ODI batting rankings, as well as teammates Shahzad Zadran and Shubman Gill.
It’s another feather in Rohit’s cap, underlining his phenomenal longevity and success in the 50-over format. Renowned for his graceful stroke play and big chase maintenance, Rohit has been among India’s most reliable top-order batters. With his latest accolade, which follows a number of double centuries and fabulous tournament showings, his resume is even better.
India all-rounder Axar Patel also moved up in ICC rankings. His contributions with both bat and ball over Australia – useful innings of 31 and 44 in the first two games and a wicket in each match – carried him to 31st among bowlers and eighth among all-rounders.
Meanwhile, in the rankings, New Zealand’s Mitchell Santner rose to fourth among ODI bowlers, and Australia’s Josh Hazlewood leapt to eighth. South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer surged in the Test category following their impressive performances against Pakistan. Maharaj rose to a career-best 13th position, and Harmer climbed 26 slots to bag the 45th place.
That Rohit has done to become the new No. 1 ODI batter is a proud moment for Indian cricket, and it speaks volumes about his effortless ability to score big, irrespective of formats.
