The Mumbai Indians are set to make a strong comeback in the IPL 2025 after a disappointing last season, as they have called back a former coach who delivered them three IPL titles—Mahela Jayawardene. Jayawardene will replace Mark Boucher, who replaced him in 2022 as head of the Mumbai Indians.
In 2022, Mark Boucher was appointed as head coach of MI because Jayawardane got the responsibility of overseeing the expansion of MI’s global teams across different leagues in different parts of the globe, as he was named the Global Head of Cricket of MI Franchisee.
Boucher was replaced for not performing as he was expected; under Boucher, Mumbai finished fourth and tenth in the 2024 and 2024 seasons, respectively. This is why the Mumbai Indians’ think tank called back their most successful coach to bring back their glory days again.
Jayawardene has won at least one trophy with every MI franchisee that he has ever worked with. Mahela coached MI (WPL), MI New York (MLC), and MI Emirates (ILT20) and won the respective leagues of these mentioned teams.
Jayawardene stated that he intends to build on the franchise owners’ goal. “My journey within the MI family has always been one of evolution. In 2017, the focus was on bringing together a talented group of individuals to play the best cricket ever and we did very well. Now to return, at the same moment in history, where we look ahead at the future and the opportunity to further strengthen the love of MI, build on the vision of the owners, and continue to add to the history of Mumbai Indians, is an exciting challenge I am looking forward to,” the Sri Lankan said.
