Lucknow Super Giants appointed Zaheer Khan as their new mentor. Zaheer will fill this mentor role in LSG, which has been vacant since Gautam Gambhir’s departure in 2023. After Morne Morkel left the LSG to work with Gambhir’s coaching staff with the Indian squad, Zaheer is also assumed to play the role of bowling coach.
“If I am there in the set-up, does the team need another bowling coach?” Zaheer grinned as he asked a question to the media following his unveiling, without giving away that he would be the bowling coach.
Zaheer had previously worked as a backroom staff member for IPL franchisees. He was the director of cricket and then head of global development at Mumbai Indians from 2018 to 2022.
Zaheer played for Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League. He played in 100 games for these three teams across ten seasons, taking 102 wickets at an economy rate of 7.58. Before quitting all forms of cricket, he led Daredevils during his final appearance in the competition in 2017.
In addition to his mentorship, Zaheer’s profile would be expanded by LSG, which will entail participation in off-season scouting and player-development initiatives.
With Lance Klusener and Adam Voges serving as his assistants, Justin Langer, who took over for Andy Flower as head coach prior to the 2024 IPL season, will remain in that position. The KL Rahul-led team missed out on a spot in the top four in 2024 based on net run rate, despite making the playoffs in their first two seasons.
