For the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, opener Jatinder Singh has been named captain of Oman. The squad selection had some surprises, with the non-inclusion of experienced all-rounder Aamir Kaleem a standout, despite having performed well during the Asia Cup, even though at 43, he is close to passing beyond his prime.
Vinayak Shukla has been selected as vice-captain, which indicates their plans to mix youth with experience. The 15-man squad includes five new names and is an indicator that the planning cycle for the global event has shifted gears.
All-rounders Wasim Ali, Karan Sonavale and Jay Odedra make the cut, as do pacemen Shafiq Jan and Jiten Ramanandi. Ramanandi, Odedra and Wasim had earlier played in T20 World Cup qualifiers for Oman, while Shafiq Jan made his international debut in the Asia Cup Rising Stars competition. Sonavale was another involved in that contest, showing what a year of international experience has done for him.
There is speculation about the missing name of Aamir Kaleem, considering he was among the two half-centurions for Oman in the Asia Cup and played in World Cup qualifiers as well. Although he had been impressive, the selectors decided to go for a younger squad with better complementary players.
With the most ODIs and T20 matches, Jatinder Singh is also Oman’s leading run-scorer in the latter form. Having missed the last T20 World Cup, he is back, and not only as a player but also as the captain.
Oman is in Group B along with Sri Lanka, Australia, Zimbabwe and Ireland. They start their World Cup campaign against Zimbabwe on February 9.
