In their most recent match against CSK, Suryakumar Yadav batted brilliantly to get 68, and Rohit Sharma showed off his wizardry with an undefeated 76*. MI defeated the CSK in the second El Clasico of the 2025 season by 9 wickets. CSK set a target of 177 for MI, thanks to fifties from Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja and an entertaining cameo from debutant Ayush Mhatre (32). However, the onslaught from Rohit and Suryakumar knocked their socks off at the Wankhede Stadium.
CSK’s defeat kept them last on the IPL 2025 points table as MI went up to 6th on the points table and boosted their net run-rate. At Wankhede, the contest frequently hinged on the toss, which this time went in Hardik Pandya’s favor, and he chose to bowl first.
Chennai Super Kings first innings
MI pacers Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar bowled accurately, allowing CSK openers Shaik Rasheed (19) and Rachin Ravindra (5) to play carefully when invited to bat. Rasheed completed the first four of the innings off the final ball of the third over, as he stepped out and pulled off Chahar to the fence. Ravindra (5 off 9) was then dismissed by left-arm pacer Ashwani Kumar (1-42), who earlier had a terrific match against Kolkata Knight Riders when he had claimed 4-24 at this venue too. Aswani dismissed the New Zealander when he caught off wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton.
Mhatre’s Extraordinary Debut
Mhatre’s fearless style of batting cost Ashwani 18 runs in the left-arm pacer’s first over. The 17-year-old Mhatre had only joined CSK a few days prior and was replacing Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was injured. But he looked undaunted and right at home on the big stage as he displayed his six-hitting ability with ease during his short 15-ball time at the crease.
Mhatre came in to bat at No. 3 in the fourth over and made his IPL debut a memorable one as he smashed a four and then two sixes off Ashwani. He slapped a back-foot punch through the mid-off fence and finished Ashwani’s over with two consecutive sixes over the deep-midwicket and square-leg fence respectively.
CSK’s Poor Powerplay
CSK had posted 48-1 after the Powerplay, and MI’s deadly pacer Jasprit Bumrah (2-25) hadn’t yet bowled. Confident Mhatre struck two more fours off Chahar with a superbly timed back-foot punch, but Mhatre mis-timed a pull shot, and CSK’s Mitchell Santner accepted the catch at long-on. Dube and Jadeja used their experience smartly, forging a partnership of 79 off just 50 balls. In the 16th over, Dube and Jadeja hit Ashwani for 24 runs, containing 1 four and 3 sixes. Mhatre reached his 50 off just 30 balls.
Santner held Jadeja and MS Dhoni to only six runs in the 18th over. Jadeja got a four after a misfield off Boult before Bumrah had Dhoni caught at backward square leg. The over went for nine runs as Jamie Overton got a faint inside edge for a four. In a last over of 16 runs from Boult, Jadeja reached a fast 50 off 34 balls, striking a four and a six in the final over.
Mumbai Indians Run Chase of 177
Mumbai Indians came to the field with a target of 177 to defeat the CSK in the game on Sunday; Ryan Rickleton set the pace with two boundaries in the first over. Rohit Sharma opened the MI’s innings with Ryan Rickleton, and the two stood for a partnership of 63 runs before the latter was dismissed by Jadeja at 6.4 overs.
Suryakumar was sent in to void the threat of spin, which he did well with a six and a boundary off Jadeja, and he did the same in the next over from the CSK all-rounder. However, Rohit made good progress gradually and scored his first fifty off 33 balls this season.
During MI’s easy chase, Suryakumar destroyed Noor Ahmed by hitting three boundaries off him in his second over. The plan to have Matheesha Pathirana also did not work as he also ended up not being effective with a 14-run over, where Rohit got some fortune at the end with a six off the last delivery.
Suryakumar reached his fifty in just 26 balls, and Rohit also attempted to work over Noor marginally with a boundary. Suryakumar then struck a six, and the equation now was a comfortable 20 off 30 balls. With Rohit and Suryakumar both hitting a six to cut the equation to just six runs, MI now had a couple of boundaries. MI had just six runs to chase with Suryakumar hitting the winning runs from another maximum with an unbeaten partnership of 114 as MI recorded their fourth win of the season and climbed to 6th in the points table.
