To secure their place in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the Indian national cricket team defeated the English national cricket team by seven runs after a high-scoring semi-final match at the legendary Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Thanks to an explosive batting performance by Sanju Samson and a brilliant bowling spell from Jasprit Bumrah, India was able to defend an enormous score of 253 and will now meet New Zealand in the final.
After winning the toss and asking their opponents to bat first, India went off to a blistering start, losing Abhishek Sharma for a duck to the bowler Will Jacks early in the innings. Samson shifted all momentum back to India by hitting back at England’s bowlers after he received a dropped catch on his second ball. He continued to hit out aggressively for the remainder of his innings against England’s pace trio of Jofra Archer, Sam Curran and Will Jacks, dominating the powerplay period.
Samson collected runs regularly during the opening five overs, hitting an array of boundaries against the three aforementioned English bowlers. He then formed a strong partnership with Ishan Kishan, who complemented his batting style by continually picking up runs with his own aggressive batting. Kishan also scored runs rapidly and was successful in collecting boundaries before being out to England’s leg-spinner Adil Rashid.
As an outstanding player with 89 runs off 42 balls, Samson led from the front and kept running up a big score for India, even after he had been dismissed. The Indian middle order kept on scoring runs also; Dube struck an important 40, and Varma hit 3 huge sixes to punish Archer in one over as Hardik finished the innings strongly, taking India to an imposing total of 253 for 7 in their 20 overs.
England’s reply got off to a shaky start when Pandya dismissed Salt very early on in the innings; after this, Bumrah caused big problems for England, claiming the wicket of Harry Brook with a clever slow ball. However, the young star Jacob Bethell provided fireworks and attacked the Indian bowling, ensuring that England remained in contention.
Bethell smashed 105 runs off just 48 balls and built an important partnership with Jacks to assist in keeping the required run rate on target during the chase. England’s run rate was quick enough to allow them to go past 100 runs before being competitive in the chase.
The turning point for the match came when Bumrah bowled a critical spell in the dying overs of the English innings, thereby slowing down the momentum of England’s innings. His final over, which was in the 18th over, marked a crucial turning point for the match because it made the required run target for England to achieve much larger in the final overs of their innings.
India maintained their composure to secure a thrilling win against Bethell’s efforts in the final over of the match where Dube successfully defended 30 runs. With this win India advances to the T20 World Cup final for the second time in as many tournaments, keeping alive their hopes of defending their title.
