On Tuesday, 22 September, ICC came up with a shocker by suspending the United States of America Cricket Board. As per the latest update, the ICC has suspended the USACB (United States of America Cricket Board) with immediate effect. According to ICC, the reason for USACB’s suspension is repeated and continued breaches of its obligations as an ICC Member.
The decision to suspend the USA cricket board was made in the last ICC meeting after a year-long review and stakeholders’ engagement. USA Cricket’s inability to establish an effective governance framework, its lack of advancement towards being recognized as a National Governing Body by the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), and ongoing actions that have resulted in “reputational damage” to the sport were highlighted as major factors.
Despite the suspension of USA Cricket, national team of the USA will still be able to take part in ICC events, including preparation for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028. To ensure stability, the ICC and its representatives will take on a temporary operational role of the USA national teams and will focus on high-performance programs and player progression.
A Normalisation Committee appointed by the ICC will work with management to prescribe the reforms that USA Cricket must undertake to regain its membership. The reforms will include changes to governance, operations, and structure, and the Normalisation Committee will oversee and assist the process.
“The suspension is an unfortunate but necessary step to protect the long term interests of the game,” ICC said, while reiterating its commitment to players and growing the sport in the USA.
