In a thrilling finish, Gujarat Titans clinched a last-ball victory over the Mumbai Indians by just 3 wickets

In an exciting match that went right down to the last ball due to rain, Gujarat Titans (GT) upset Mumbai Indians (MI) by a slim margin of three wickets at the Wankhede Stadium.  In a crucial victory in the 2025 IPL, GT maintained composure to win the match with zero balls left, chasing a revised DLS target of 147 in 19 overs.

Gill Leads from the Front

With a solid knock of 43 runs off 46 balls, Shubman Gill played a crucial role in the GT’s innings. Although he had a relatively modest strike rate, Gill’s innings provided the structure for the chase. Gill’s fielding was also impressive, taking three catches, which won him the Player of the Match for an all-round performance.

After losing Sai Sudharsan early in the innings, GT was in a strong position before rain stopped play at the 14-over mark thanks to a strong 72-run second-wicket combination from Gill and Jos Buttler (30 off 27). When play resumed, the Titans lost a few quick wickets with Jasprit Bumrah (2/19) and debutant Ashwani Kumar (2/28) coming into the attack with important strikes.

Rutherford’s Firepower, Coetzee’s Finish

Sherfane Rutherford made a crucial appearance, bringing GT closer to the target with a score of 28 from just 15 balls. It was a tense final over but Coetzee (12 off 6) was the hero after his late-in-the-game fireworks. Coetzee bowled earlier too taking 1 for 10 off 2 economical overs, also enhancing his MVP credentials.

MI Falter Despite Jacks’ Half-Century

The Mumbai Indians scored 155 runs for 8 wickets in 20 overs after being put in to bat. Suryakumar Yadav contributed with 35 runs off 24 balls, meanwhile Will Jacks scored a quick half-century. However, after Jacks was dismissed in the 12th over (11.4), the innings lost momentum. Mumbai faced a difficult phase, losing five wickets for just 27 runs, which brought their total down to 119. However, this period highlighted the effectiveness of Sai Kishore (2/34), Rashid Khan (1/21), and Gerald Coetzee, who did a commendable job in applying pressure during the middle overs. Their performance demonstrated the importance of maintaining focus and executing plans under challenging circumstances.

Drama, Reviews & Rain

The game had numerous reviews and appeals on the Decision Review System (DRS). There were so many appeals that we left the players and the fans in suspense. The rain interruptions and later penalty for slow over rate also added to our suspense before debutant Ashwani Kumar was brought on as a concussion sub for Corbin Bosch in GT’s innings.

Points & Implications

The win lifts Gujarat Titans further up the IPL table as the tournament approaches its business end. In the meantime, the Mumbai Indians still struggle with consistency despite occasional bursts of genius.
