BCCI Removes Impact Player Rule from Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

The BCCI has decided to scrap the Impact Player rule from the forthcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. It was implemented in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy a few years ago and eventually expanded to the Indian Premier League (IPL). The BCCI’s decision to discontinue the Impact Player rule comes after they chose to keep it in the IPL for the next three seasons, till 2027.

Since its arrival in the 2023 season, the regulation has sparked controversy about whether it is truly good for cricket, as was originally intended, or whether it may be harming the development of all-rounders. Several high-profile players, like Rohit Sharma, have expressed reservations about the regulation, claiming it could undermine the role of all-rounders.

In May of this year, BCCI secretary Jay Shah described the rule as “a test case” in the IPL, stating that it “is not permanent, but I am not saying that it will go.”
