The BCB director, Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, wants Phil Simmons to stay as Bangladesh’s head coach till the 2027 ODI World Cup. According to Fahim, the board hopes to hire Simmons for the position on a long-term basis and will speak with him formally soon. Monday’s board meeting in Dhaka covered a number of items, including the contract extension of the current head coach of Bangladesh.
Simmons was appointed to the interim position in October of last year. Bangladesh only managed one series victory during his four-month tenure, defeating the West Indies 3-0 in Twenty20 Internationals. After losing to New Zealand and India, the team also had to leave the Champions Trophy early. In spite of this, Simmons has gained the support of director Fahim and BCB president Faruque Ahmed, the two most powerful members of the present board.
Senior assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin, who was also hired on a temporary basis in November of last year, is also scheduled to have his contract with the BCB extended. The desire of Simmons and Salahuddin to collaborate is one of the reasons the board has been inspired to extend their contracts.
The board has also accepted Hannan Sarkar’s resignation as a selector and agreed to extend the contract of spin-bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed. According to Fahim, the BCB is likewise interested in enhancing the senior team’s fielding. The board is negotiating with several fielding coaches to join the setup in order to accomplish that.
