Afif Hossain, Shoriful Islam, and Hasan Mahmud, along with Litton Das and Shakib Al Hasan have also missed out on the selection.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced its 15-member squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy, set to start on February 19. Bangladesh’s first match will be against India on February 20. The BCB has decided to rest two of their star performers, Litton Das and Shakib Al Hasan. The two have been left out of the Champions Trophy squad due to performance issues and suspension respectively.
Litton who has been a reliable batter for Bangladesh in recent times failed to score a fifty in the last 13 innings. Since the 2023 ODI World Cup, Litton has not registered a significant score in the 50 overs games. His last six innings scores in ODIs are 6, 1, 0, 0, 2, 4, and 0. The prolific keeper was dropped from the team in the last match of the Sri Lanka series after registering two consecutive ducks.
On the other hand, Shakib Al Hasan, who had retired from Test and T20I formats, has been barred from bowling in competitions due to an illegal bowling action during a one-off appearance for Surrey in the County Championship in September. This has led to his removal from the team. He failed a test of his bowling action conducted last month at Loughborough University in England and did not receive a favorable evaluation in a subsequent independent test at the Sri Ramachandra Centre for Sports Science in Chennai.
Bangladesh has excluded Afif Hossain, Shoriful Islam, and Hasan Mahmud, other than Litton and Shakib. This decision reflects a shift towards nurturing younger talents for the upcoming global tournament. Senior players Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah remain essential, while top-order batter Towhid Hridoy and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto return from injury, joined by Mustafizur Rahman.
