On a night that will cement itself in IPL history, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi played an innings for the ages, smashing a jaw-dropping 101 from just 38 balls, and led the Rajasthan Royals to a phenomenal eight-wicket victory over the Gujarat Titans. Chasing a target of 210, Suryavanshi’s extraordinary knock led RR past the target in just 15.5 overs, which is the quickest successful chase of 200+ runs in IPL history, and kept them alive in the race for the playoffs.
Making only his third IPL appearance, the teenage sensation broke both records and expectations alike. His 35-ball century is the second-fastest all-time in IPL history, and he now holds the record as the youngest centurion in men’s T20 history. Suryavanshi’s innings struck a blend of audacity, skill and fearless intent far beyond his age, which counted upwards of 11 sixes – the joint-most hit by an Indian in any IPL innings – and 94 of his 101 runs came in the form of boundaries.
Facing an experienced Gujarat Titans attack, Suryavanshi took no prisoners. From the second legal delivery he faced – a good-length ball from Mohammed Siraj – he sent the message loud and clear, launching it over long-on for six. He would go on to dominate veterans like Ishant Sharma and Prasidh Krishna with ruthless ease. At one point, he smashed debutant Karim Janat for 30 runs in a single over, including boundaries off every ball.
“I’ve never seen anything like that,” said his opening partner, Yashasvi Jaiswal, who played a composed 70* off 40 balls. “It was one of the best innings I’ve ever witnessed.”
Despite missing their regular skipper Shubman Gill due to back spasms, Gujarat Titans posted a strong 209 for 4, courtesy of Gill’s 84 and Jos Buttler’s late charge with 50 off 27. Wanindu Hasaranga managed a rare period of control with three quiet overs, but Buttler broke the shackles, helping GT reach a strong total.
However, all of that was overshadowed by Suryavanshi’s explosive brilliance.
His innings reached its poetic peak when he reached the century mark with a six off Rashid Khan – arguably the greatest T20 spinner in the world. Rashid, one of the few bowlers who managed to hold his own amid the carnage, was finally breached by a fearless lofted shot that sent the crowd into raptures.
Suryavanshi eventually fell to a pinpoint yorker from Prasidh Krishna, but the damage had been done by then. Rajasthan Royals coasted home with 26 balls to spare, finishing at 212 for 2.
This innings will not only go down as one of the finest in IPL history but also serve as a generational statement: that the future of Indian cricket may already be here, in the form of a 14-year-old phenom.
As the cricketing world tries to grasp what they just witnessed, one thing is certain: Vaibhav Suryavanshi hasn’t just announced his arrival – he’s torn down the doors of expectation.
