Litton Das to Lead the Team in Absence of Shanto as Bangladesh Announces Squad for West Indies T20I Series

Bangladesh has announced the squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against West Indies. Wicketkeeper batter Litton Das has been named captain for this series. This is the first time Das has been appointed skipper for an entire series, although he had taken charge on the field several times previously.

Shamim Hossain, a batting allrounder who last played an international match for Bangladesh in December 2023 in New Zealand, has returned. Shamim, 24, has competed in the format before but has failed to break through. In 14 T20I innings, he has 254 runs at a strike rate of 115.98, with his top score of 51, which is his lone half-century in the format.

The most unexpected inclusion in the Bangladesh T20I squad for the West Indies Series is that of young medium pacer Ripon Mondol. Mondol is 21 years old, and he played just three T20Is for Bangladesh in the Hangzhou Asian Games in October 2023.

From the experience perspective, the Bangladesh T20I squad doesn’t have much depth, as the usual captain of the team, Najmul Hossain Shanto, has not recovered from his injury. Meanwhile, there is no update regarding the availability of veteran allrounder Shakib Al Hasan, who now plays T20Is for Bangladesh.

The major misses from the last T20I squad of Bangladesh that played in India in October are, Towhid Hridoy, who picked up a groin injury; Mustafizur Rahman, who is on a break after becoming a father; and Rakibul Hasan, who was not picked up; and Mahmudullah, who has retired from the format since then.

To fill in the places these players left In addition to Shamim and Mondal, fast bowler Hasan Mahmud, left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed, top-order batsman Soumya Sarkar, and middle-order batter Afif Hossain have been called up for the West Indies T20I series.
