Gillespie to Remain Head Coach for Pakistan’s South Africa Tour, but Future is Still in Jeopardy

The PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) has turned down the rumors of Aakib Javed replacing Jason Gillespie as head coach of Pakistan for at least the South Africa tour. According to a recent news report on this story by ESPNcricinfo, the PCB has said that Gillespie will remain the head coach of Pakistan for the upcoming test series against South Africa.

However, the ace governing body of cricket in Pakistan has not said anything about Gillespie’s future with the Pakistan team after the tour. There are countless reports and rumors about Aakib Javid replacing Jason Gillespie in local media, despite Gillespie’s contract with PCB running till 2026.

“As announced previously, Jason Gillespie will continue to coach the Pakistan side for the two red-ball matches against South Africa,” a statement from the PCB on X said.

The PCB approached Gillespie earlier this week about taking over as white-ball coach until the Champions Trophy was done. However, it is believed that Gillespie rejected the offer because the greater responsibility did not translate into an equivalent rise in his pay.

The PCB then focused on finding a local appointment to take Kirsten’s place; this is how the name of Aakib Javed comes into the story. Aakib Javed is also the head of PCB’s newly formed selection committee.

For now, Jason Gillespie may appear to have saved his job. But after this whole saga, one thing is evident: the relationship between the coach and the board will not be the same as before this incident.
