Ahead of their Caribbean Tour, the Bangladesh team suffered a huge blow in the form of skipper Shanto’s unavailability. Bangladesh’s captain will not play in the test series against the West Indies due to the groin injury he got while fielding in the second ODI against Afghanistan.
Losing Shanto will be a huge gap to fill for Bangladesh because he is not just the captain but a significant batter too who plays a huge role in Bangladesh’s batting. In the match during which he got injured, Shanto played a 76-run knock that eventually proved to be the match-winning endeavor.
“Shanto underwent an MRI in Sharjah yesterday,” BCB’s Senior Physician Dr. Debashis Chowdhury said. “We have received the team physio’s report and the scan report, which has confirmed a Grade II strain on his left groin. This will require a period of rest and rehabilitation. He has been ruled out of the third ODI against Afghanistan and will also be unavailable for the Test series in the West Indies. We will reassess his condition after two weeks. He will return home from the UAE to continue his rehab.”
The BCB Chief Selector, Gazi Ashraf Hossain, named Mehidy Hasna Miraz captain of the test team for the West Indies Test Series in place of Shanto. This West Indies Test Series might become the toughest test that the Bengal Tigers have ever faced in the Caribbean in recent times because they are already short of veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim, who is also out of the team due to injury, and now skipper Shanto. So, it is going to be a huge mountain that Mehidy has to climb with the limited resources that he has.
