Sri Lanka Head Coach Chris Silverwood Steps Down From His Position

Chris Silverwood has resigned as the men’s team head coach of Sri Lanka with immediate effect. In April 2022, the former fast bowler for England was given this position. In April 2024, SLC (Sri Lanka Cricket) decided to extend his contract through the conclusion of the ongoing T20 World Cup.

Speaking about the former Sri Lankan coach, the CEO of SLC, Ashley de Silva, stated that Silverwood had announced his resignation before the board had had any internal conversations about whether or not to give him a longer term.

“Being an international coach means long periods away from loved ones,” Silverwood stated in a statement from SLC. “After lengthy conversations with my family and with a heavy heart, I feel it is now time for me to return home and spend some quality time together.”

Silverwood expressed gratitude to the SLC management, coaches, players, and backroom crew, stating that he would be “taking away many fond memories” from his time there.

As a former fast bowler, Chris prioritized the growth of Sri Lanka’s pace bowling capabilities under his tenure. Sri Lankan pacers such as Dilshan Madushanka, Asitha Fernando, Matheesha Pathirana, and Nuwan Thushara have all excelled under his leadership.

During his time in the head coach position, Sri Lanka won the T20 Asia Cup in 2022 and reached the 2023 ODI Asia Cup final.

The CEO of SLC said that the board would “also be doing some head-hunting” in addition to advertising the head coach position. According to him, the board was also thinking of hiring local coaches for the role.

After the T20 World Cup 2024, Sri Lanka’s next big challenge is the 3-match Test series in England, which starts on August 21.
