Steve Smith Announces Retirement from ODI Cricket After Australia’s Champions Trophy Exit

Steve Smith Calls it a Day on ODI Cricket Following Champions Trophy Dismissal. Following Australia’s narrow loss to India in the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Steve Smith has announced his retirement from one-day international cricket. The 34-year-old Australian captain has been one of the mainstays of the national side for over a decade but from now on will not play any form of 50-overs cricket

Smith is a two-time ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup winner who thanked life for the experiences he and his fellow players enjoyed throughout his ODI runs. “It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it,” he acknowledged in a statement issued by Cricket Australia. He shared some of the key moments from his career-the 2015 and 2023 World Cup victories for Australia. “There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories.”

Smith said that it was a good time for new players to come and take over the ODI format. Here is a great opportunity for them to start preparing for the 2027 World Cup, and so it feels like a good time for me to make way for them,” said Smith. Having played 170 ODIs, Smith scored 5800 runs for Australia at an average of 43.28, with 12 centuries and 35 half-centuries. He also chipped in with 28 wickets with the ball.

His legacy is set in stone in terms of being one of Australia’s finest players ever to grace the ODI format. Former teammate and current selection chair George Bailey is full of support for Smith’s decision. “His record as a batter across a lot of innings is exemplary,” Bailey said. “Steve still has his eye on Test cricket and is an integral member of that team both as a player and as a leader.”
