Rohit Sharma Announced His Retirement from Test Cricket Amidst IPL 2025

A great Indian captain and batsman, Rohit Sharma, recently announced his retirement from test cricket on Wednesday. He added a new post on Instagram on Wednesday, saying, “ Hello everyone, I would like to inform you all that I am retiring from Test Cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent our country in Whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI series.”

BCCI also confirmed that Rohit will continue leading the Indian ODI team. However, Rohit’s retirement from Test cricket has disheartened his fans. Rohit is a lively image in Cricket, who leaves such a legacy in playing records, that would inspire thousands of cricketers to these shores and beyond.

Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian captain, praised Rohit Sharma’s retirement on social media by saying, “He is a great player for India, but someone has to leave the game. My best wishes to him. He had a good career, he will play One Day for India, and IPL. BCCI’s work is to support the player”. Apart from this, on 29th June 2024, Rohit Sharma also took retirement from the T20Is after the 2024 T20I World Cup win.

Some Notable Achievements of Rohit Sharma in Test Cricket

Rohit Sharma began his Test cricket career for India in 2013, scoring 4301 runs in total in 67 Test matches (including 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries) at an average of 40.57. He was appointed captain of India in the longest format in 2022, and under his captaincy,  India lost the 2023 World Test Championship Final against Australia. Rohit’s last appearance in a test was in the last Test match against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He announced his retirement from international cricket just before the soon-to-begin 5-match test series against England, commencing in June 2025.

Under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy in Test Cricket, India played 24 matches and won 12, lost 9, and drew 3. Remarkable victories under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy in the longest format include a 2-0 victory over Sri Lanka (at home), a 2-0 victory over Bangladesh (away), and a 2-1 victory over Australia (at home)

Outside of his test series exploits, Rohit is also the only player to be the first player to score a double century in an ODI series. Rohit also led India to two T20 World Cup victories in the previous one year. Along with this, Rohit won two prestigious awards in his cricket career, that is the Arjuna Award in 2015 and the Khel Ratna Award in 2020 for the highest Sporting figure.

Rohit, who has chosen to carry on as an ODI captain, may have to go to England for the next ODI series, which would mark his bright shining star in the eyes of his fans and supporters. With the completion of the great man’s career, it marks the end of his special chapter in Indian cricket.
