Punjab Kings Claims Nail-Biting Win Over Chennai Super Kings in Chennai

Punjab Kings (PBKS), in a thrilling contest at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, registered 4-wicket victory against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 49th match of IPL 2025. PBKS chased a competitive target of 191, with two balls to spare involving captain Shreyas Iyer and his scintillating 72 runs off 41 balls which resulted in him being awarded Player of the Match.

PBKS, who won the toss and fielded first, was under pressure early as CSK all-rounder Sam Curran scored 88 runs of just 47 balls including nine 4s and four 6s. Curran’s innings was the lynchpin of CSK total of 190 all out in 19.2 overs. The CSK wickets fell quickly at the end due to Yuzvendra Chahal who took a hat-trick that mopped up the lower order.

Chahal’s memorable bowling effort of 3 overs, 4 wickets for 32 runs, including a hat-trick in the 19th over was a highlight showing for PBKS. Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen both also contributed by getting 2 wickets a piece and kept the CSK batters honest, despite Curran’s feats.

Punjab, chasing 191, established a satisfactory start with young Priyansh Arya (23 off 15) and Prabhsimran (54 off 36) consolidating a foundation. However, the chase was anchored by Shreyas Iyer’s confident innings. Iyer countered beautifully with five fours and four sixes, built several partnerships, particularly a key 64-run partnership with Prabhsimran, before dismissing in the 19th over with just 3 required.

There was a moment of panic late on with Matheesha Pathirana’s double-strike (2/45) sending two new batsmen to the crease, but Josh Inglis and Marco Jansen were calm enough to see PBKS home at 194/6 in 19.4 overs.

The CSK innings started poorly with three wickets down in a hurry within powerplay. Dewald Brevis (32 off 26) supported the efforts of Curran in the middle overs, but once Curran fell in the 18th over, CSK collapsed, losing 7 wickets for 18 in the last two overs. MS Dhoni showed some vintage signs with a cameo 11 off 4, but not enough to get CSK past 200.

The outcome leaves PBKS that much closer to the playoffs while also making CSK’s work harder down the stretch. With form peaking at just the right time and Shreyas Iyer leading the charge, the Punjab Kings have found their stride and are clearly contenders again this season.
