Last week, at the Wankhede Stadium, the Mumbai Indians (MI) straightjacketed the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) hitters on an unusually slow surface. In the 41st Match of IPL 2025 on Wednesday, held at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians did the same reverse fixtures and registered a mammoth seven-wicket victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad. MI completed the run chase within 16 overs, thanks to Rohit Sharma’s run chase of 70.
With their fourth consecutive victory of the tournament, MI moved up to third position in the standings with 10 points, behind DC and GT, who were tied for 12 points. MI captain Hardik Pandya’s bold choice to bowl first was greatly appreciated.
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Innings: A Struggle to 143/8
Sunrisers Hyderabad had one of the worst starts of the season that would have nearly any team doomed for defeat. They were reeling after losing their top three batsmen—Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan—within the first four overs while at a mere 13 runs. To make matters worse, Kishan’s departure was bizarre, as he thought he had touched the ball. Kishan walked off to the undisguised confusion of the fielding side, who had not even appealed the dismissal, and the umpire had indicated wide. Broadcast replays later indisputably showed there was no bat.
So at 13/4, Sunrisers were doubtful. At 35/5, with less than 7 overs, the team appeared doomed. However, Abhinav Manohar and Heinrich Klaasen put together an important attack with an impressive 108-run partnership.
Klaasen played a fantastic knock of 71 in 44 balls, including nine fours and two sixes, while Manohar added 43 off 37 balls with three sixes and two fours. Ultimately, SRH finished on 143/8 in 20 overs. MI, led by Trent Boult for their bowling effort, bowled a match-winning spell of 4/26.
Deepak Chahar was hugely economical (2/12) and dangerous through the middle overs, while Hardik Pandya (1/31) made a talisman performance with a key wicket and excellent leadership at the back end of the innings.
Mumbai Indians’ Chase: Rohit Sharma Shines with the bat
To respond, the Mumbai Indians started their chase well. They lost Ryan Rickelton early for 11 off 8 balls with Jaydev Unadkat being the bowler, but the partnership between Rohit Sharma and Will Jacks steadied the innings for the Mumbai Indians. At the end of the power-play, Mumbai Indians were 56/1 with the pair adding 64 runs for the second wicket.
Will Jacks was looking quite fluid until he was out for 22 off 19 balls, although by this stage, Mumbai Indians had already wrestled back control of the game. Rohit Sharma continued to bat with intent, looking to put away anything loose while also rotating the strike. He registered his second consecutive half-century with 70 off 46 balls, striking eight fours and three sixes. Rohit Sharma’s mastery and batting were crucial for the Mumbai Indians as they steadily approached the target.
The finishing touches were applied by Suryakumar Yadav, who played a scintillating cameo with an unbeaten 40 off just 19 balls. SKY struck five boundaries and two sixes in a display of aggressive strokeplay that ensured there were no late stumbles. His acceleration turned a steady chase into a swift finish, sealing the win with 4.2 overs to spare.
