Marcus Stoinis Announced Shocking Retirement from ODIs Despite Being Named in Champions Trophy Squad of Australia

Aussie allrounder Marcus Stoinis shocked the cricket world on Thursday morning by announcing his retirement from ODIs despite being a member of the Champions Trophy 2025 Squad of Australia

Stoinis has been a crucial part of Australia’s recent ODI success, helping them win the 2023 ODI World Cup; in 2019, Marcus was named ODI Player of the Year.

His announcement of retirement not only shocked CA (Cricket Australia) but also raised a concern about finding a like-for-like replacement for the fast-bowling all-rounder.

At present Stoinis is playing in South Africa for Durban’s Super Giants in the ongoing SA20 tournament, although he had a mild hamstring injury there while bowling.

“Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold. Representing my country at the highest level is something I’ll always cherish.”

“This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career. I’ve got a fantastic relationship with Ron (Andrew McDonald) and I’ve hugely appreciated his support.”

“I’ll be cheering the boys on in Pakistan,” Stoinis said in his goodbye note. Stoinis made his ODI debut for Australia against England at Leeds on September 11, 2015. For Australia, Marcus Stoinis played 71 ODIs, registering 1495 runs at an average of 26.69 and a high score of 146*. In 71 ODI matches for Australia, he recorded 48 wickets at an average of 43.12 and an economy rate of 5.99.

Marcus Stoinis’ announcement made the situation more difficult for Australia, which is already struggling to get a quality fast-bowling all-rounder to add more depth to the team in subcontinent conditions, as Mitchell Marsh and Cameron Green both are still recovering from injuries.
