ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024: Laura Wolvaardt to Lead South Africa Women’s Squad for the T20 World Cup 2024

Cricket South Africa has announced the South Africa Women’s Team for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. Laura Wolvaardt will captain the finalists of the previous edition for the first time in an ICC event. The same squad that is named for the World Cup will also play a three-match T20I series against Pakistan from September 16 to 20.

The core of the Proteas Women’s Team is the same as the team that participated in the last World Cup on home soil. Sune Luus, who led the team to the T20 World Cup Final last year, is still an important member of the squad. She is joined by experienced players such as Marizanne Kapp, Chloe Tryon, Nadine De Klerk, Tazmin Brits, Ayabonga Khaka, and Nonkululeko Mlaba.

The Proteas have essentially kept the same lineup from the previous season. Except for Seshnie Naidu, Eliz-Mari Marx, Tumi Sekhukhune, and Mieke De Ridder, who are four new additions to the squad. They have also designated 19-year-old all-round batsman Miané Smit as a traveling reserve in addition to the players mentioned above.

After the selection of the team, CSA Proteas Women Convenor of Selectors, Clinton du Preez said, “While playing in the UAE presents some unknowns, we have conducted thorough research and selected a balanced squad that complements the conditions, with strategic options in mind as we head into the T20 World Cup.”

“Laura (Wolvaardt) has been exceptional as a leader, bringing a holistic approach to the team. She leads with respect and integrity, and we are excited to see her leadership and playing qualities shine at the World Cup. Seshnie Naidu has shown significant growth as a bowler within our camps, and we see her as an X-factor for the World Cup. She brings a unique element to our bowling attack, offering something different that could be pivotal.

“We’ve had strong competition for places, and while some players will unfortunately miss out, these decisions were made based on balance, form, fitness, and strategic considerations for the format. Every selection was carefully considered to ensure the best possible squad for this important tournament.”

In the upcoming T20 World Cup in UAE, South Africa is in Group B with Bangladesh, South Africa, Scotland, and the West Indies and starts their campaign on October 4 against the West Indies.
