Australian allrounder Ashleigh Gardner asked for three Tests to be included in women’s Ashes ahead of the upcoming MCG contention with England players backing up the demand.
Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner advocated for three Tests to be covered in the Women’s Ashes, while also acknowledging the possibility of that becoming a reality is minimal, surely after the next four years. The Australian right-arm off-spinner expressed her desire to stretch the multi-format series with the England Women’s Team to nine matches, three in T20s, three in ODIs, and three Tests.
Gardner said while speaking to reporters at Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday, “It would be quite tough just with how busy our summers are. But personally, I would love to see three, three, three.” She added, “I would love to play more Test cricket against England. Playing the one Test feels like a bit of a novelty sometimes.”
The Women’s Ashes one-off Test will take place at Melbourne Cricket Ground from January 30 onwards and will set off the end of the multi-format series, beginning with the first ODI of three on January 12 and the first T20I of three on January 20.
England players supported the demand of Gardner and stated their thoughts on the extension of a multi-format series during an interview. England opener Tammy Beaumont who recorded a double century during the 2023 women’s Ashes Test, said, “I completely agree with Ash … I would love to see it. ” She also called the best thing about Ash- “narrative”.
The last women’s Ashes in 2023 concluded with a draw between both teams earning eight points each, Australia winning the one-off Test, while England won both ODIs. Gardner was announced ‘Player of the Match’ in the Test, having 40 runs and 12 wickets under her name, which also includes an 8-wicket haul in the second innings while defending 268 runs for Australia.
