IPL 2025 to Allow Temporary Replacements for Season’s Final Phase, with Retention Restrictions

In a big move ahead of the IPL 2025, the Indian Premier League has indicated that franchises will be able to sign temporary replacements for the final part of the season, which won’t be retainable ahead of back for 2026 season to safeguard the auction process.

The decision follows the league suspension due to elevated cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan, and the revised schedule overlaps with multiple international commitments, leading many overseas players to withdraw from playing the final phase of the tournament. Some notable withdrawals include Jake Fraser-McGurk (Delhi Capitals) and Jamie Overton (Chennai Super Kings).

Under normal IPL rules, teams can only sign replacements for injury and illness with a deadline on replacing a player until a teams’ 12th match of the season, given the exceptional circumstances, the IPL has relaxed these rules to create wiggle room for more player changes.

In a memorandum distributed to franchises, the IPL has stated:

“Given the non-availability of certain foreign players due to national commitments or personal reasons or any injury or illness, Temporary Replacement Players will be allowed until the conclusion of this tournament.”

Nevertheless, it placed a significant limitation on any player, signed as a replacement temporarily after the suspension would not be eligible to retain those players in the 2026 season and would have to enter the player pool again using the IPL Player Auction after the season.

This change appears to be an effort to avoid teams exploiting replacement signings as a backdoor into the auction system, leading to a potential strategy that grants them available emerging and emerging player into becoming valuable investment for future seasons.

Importantly the IPL also stated that players approved to be signed as replacement before the suspension will be able to be retained. There were four instances in the 48 hours before the suspension occurred:

  • Sediqullah Atal (Delhi Capitals)
  • Mayank Agarwal (Royal Challengers Bengaluru)
  • Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Nandre Burger (Rajasthan Royals)

The IPL 2025 season is planned to reignite on May 17, with the final on June 3, as all teams summon their attention for the most important final leg of the tournament, which bodes even more strategic consideration.
