New Zealand Squad for Champions Trophy 2025: Mitchell Santner will lead the Black Caps after taking over the captaincy from Kane Williamson. Here’s Complete New Zealand’s 15-member Squad.
The New Zealand cricket team announced its 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC event to be held in Pakistan and UAE from February 19. The Champions Trophy marks the return of ICC events in Pakistan after 29 years. The last ICC event Pakistan hosted was the 1996 World Cup.
After being initially dropped from the international calendar since its last edition in 2017 the Champions Trophy broke again into ICC’s main events list after a long gap of 8 years.
The tournament will be the first major assignment of Kiwi allrounder Mitchell Santner who was recently appointed white ball captain of New Zealand in place of Williamson. Seasoned players like Kane Williamson and Tom Latham will be responsible for keeping the Kiwi dugout calm and composed during tense moments meanwhile Will O’Rourke, Ben Sears, and Nathan Smith are supposed to add energy to the squad.
New Zealand’s history in ICC events is splendid, with going up to semi-finals or finals consistently but failing to win tournaments.
Ironically Champions Trophy is the only ‘white ball tournament’ that New Zealand has won and this year, they seem to repeat their history of the 2000 edition’s victory, when they won the title by defeating the two-time champion India in the final.
Santner is the frontline spin option, with other all-rounders Michael Bracewell, Glenn Phillips, and Rachin Ravindra giving support. Veterans Kane Williamson and Tom Latham will lend valuable experience to the team, while Tom Latham is also set to take the wicketkeeping gloves for the championship.
While Santner, Williamson, and Latham were all part of New Zealand’s squad for the last edition of the Champions Trophy in England and Wales held in 2017, Williamson was also presented at the 2013 edition in England.
The right-arm fast bowler Matt Henry will head the pace bowling attack along with Lockie Ferguson, who is all set to play his fifth ICC event after playing a significant role in the last two World Cups.
Jacob Duffyn could also be a part of the playing XI as he is named as a reserve player if Lockie Ferguson becomes unavailable because of Australia’s Big Bash competition.
