Keshav Maharaj’s Groin Strain Leaves South Africa in Concern Ahead of Pakistan Test Series

South Africa is concerned probably ahead of the most vital test series of the World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle after Keshav Maharaj’s groin strain ahead of the 1st ODI against Pakistan. Due to a groin complaint, Maharaj was observed hobbling out during warm-ups before Tuesday’s first ODI against Pakistan.

Maharaj was in the starting lineup before his groin complaint, which occurred just before the toss. Andile Phehlukwayo took his place in the team moments before the start of the match.

South Africa has to play Pakistan in two Test matches following the three-match ODI series. This series is probably the most important one for the Proteas, as a victory would guarantee a top-two position and a trip to the WTC final in 2025.

Maharaj’s injury is a big issue for South Africa because he is the only specialist spinner in the test starting lineup, with Aiden Markram providing support with his occasional off-spin. Earlier this month, Maharaj bowled them to victory in Gqeberha against Sri Lanka, returning 5 for 76 on the final day triggering a collapse that showed his presence in this South African team.

The severity of Maharaj’s injury is still unknown, but it joins his name in the long list of South African bowlers who have been injured before the Pakistan test series.

Nandre Burger has been sidelined for the summer due to a stress fracture of the lower back; Wiaan Mulder broke his finger against Sri Lanka, may be available for the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan. Gerald Coetzee and Lungi Ngidi are out until January due to groin and hip issues, respectively, and Anrich Nortje was ruled out with a fractured toe before heading for the T20I series against Pakistan.

Senuran Muthusamy and Dane Piedt can fill in his place if Maharaj is ruled out of the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan.
